Top Tips for Driving Safely in the Rain
Slow down. Even a small amount of water can make tires lose traction at speeds as low as 35 mph.
Increase following distance. Leave extra space — add at least one additional second in rainy conditions.
Avoid sudden braking or sharp steering. Brake earlier and more gently because stopping takes longer on wet roads.
Turn off cruise control. Cruise control can worsen hydroplaning by keeping the car at a constant speed.
Check your tires. Bald or under‑inflated tires drastically reduce traction on wet pavement.
Use headlights and good wipers. You need to see — and be seen — in reduced visibility.
Stay in the middle lanes on highways. Water tends to pool in the right and left lanes.
Never drive through standing water. It can stall your vehicle or hide dangerous road conditions.
If you hydroplane:
Ease off the accelerator
Don’t brake hard
Steer gently in the direction you want to go
If visibility gets too bad, pull over safely. Heavy rain can make it difficult to see or control your vehicle — waiting it out is safer.
