A project two years in the making finally came to fruition, thanks to the volunteers and supporters who stepped up to make it happen. And the ribbon-cutting ceremony honored their commitment and contributions to building a brand new, two-story emergency exit for the mothers and children residing at Miriam House in Norwalk.

"We couldn't do it it without the work of the community, the Norwalk Area United Fund, John and Sue Riley, and all of the volunteers," said Rodney Schuster, Executive Director of Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo. "Alone, we could not do it."

Breanna Mantz, Miriam House Program Coordinator, described the transitional shelter as "a place where mothers bring their babies, a place where mothers feel safe for the first time." And the new porch as "a place where children play and giggle."

Former resident Molly Davis (pictured far left) shared how desperate she was to find a place to live when she moved to Norwalk so her son would be closer to his father and family. "I broke into tears and admitted, 'I need help,' something not easy for me to admit."

Thanks to the compassionate care, case management and support from Miriam House staff members, nearly a year later Molly, her son, Toby, and Sadie, their Golden Retriever, are living in their own apartment. Her son is doing well in school, and Molly is working as a home health aide, "being a real grown-up!" she said.

Everyone applauded.
