Juneteenth is celebrated as National Independence Day because we commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Months after the civil war and years after the Emancipation Proclamation there were still people bound to slavery. On June 19th, 1865 Union troops showed up to free over 250,000 people in Galveston Texas. It was a show of force that we as a nation would fight against oppression! Now nearly 160 years later and we are still fighting for equality! We have basic human needs and dignities being stripped away from us! On this day we remember that Nobody’s free until Everybody’s free!
