CHEAP REPAIRS CAN TURN INTO EXPENSIVE LESSONS.
Be careful who you trust to work on your vehicle. Unfortunately, this customer learned that the hard way.
A lady recently brought her vehicle to Skyline Automotive after having her fuel injectors replaced by a mobile mechanic. Following the repair, the vehicle would start, sputter, and barely run.
Rather than throwing more parts at the problem, we began a thorough diagnostic process. This included analyzing fuel trim data, performing relative compression testing, capturing in-cylinder pressure waveforms, and eventually inspecting the inside of the engine with a borescope.
What we discovered was extensive internal engine damage.
Our inspection revealed multiple issues consistent with damage caused during the previous injector replacement.
The original injectors had been broken into pieces. Evidence suggests that an attempt was made to extract the broken injector tips using a sharp object, damaging the injector seating surfaces in the process.
Even worse, pieces of the broken injectors had apparently been pushed into two of the engine’s four cylinders.
Once the engine was started, those foreign objects were repeatedly crushed between the pistons and cylinder heads, causing severe damage to both. We also discovered that one of the newly installed injectors was leaking excessive fuel into a cylinder due to being hit by the foreign object, contributing to cylinder wall scoring.
What started as a routine fuel injector replacement has now turned into major internal engine damage.
This is exactly why proper procedures, experience, and attention to detail matter. When something breaks during a repair, the solution isn’t to force it, ignore it, or hope for the best.
We aren’t sharing this to attack another mechanic. We’re sharing it to remind vehicle owners to choose someone who knows the work and takes responsibility when problems arise.
The cheapest repair isn’t always the least expensive repair.
