A totaled car doesn’t always look like a wreck.

Most people picture a total loss as a vehicle that’s crushed or burned. But according to a recent CCC report, nearly 1 in 4 accident claims in 2025 ended in a total loss, and that number is likely climbing toward 40% in 2026.

Why? In many cases, it has nothing to do with your repairer or how much damage your car has. It’s an economic decision your insurer makes, one your policy allows, because totaling the vehicle often costs them less than repairing it.

Your car knows more about you than you think.

Your home address. Your workplace. Where you go and when. And if your vehicle has a built-in garage door opener, it can open your garage too.

When a car is declared a total loss, it often ends up at auction. Whoever buys it could have access to all of that information.

You’d never trade in a phone or laptop without wiping it first. Your vehicle deserves the same treatment. The FTC recommends clearing your personal data before you part with any vehicle.

If your car is totaled, work with your repairer to make sure your personal information is removed before it leaves your hands. Protect your data. Protect your family.

Here’s one airbag you’ve probably never heard of.

When you think about airbags, you probably think of the ones in the steering wheel, dashboard, side curtains, and seats. But certain Toyota and Lexus models also have a passenger seat cushion airbag.

In a collision, it inflates the lower seat cushion. That keeps you from sliding under the seat belt (known as submarining) and helps keep your legs from hitting the dashboard.

It’s one more reason to make sure every SRS component is repaired to OEM specifications.

Do you know where you can and can’t repair on a radar-equipped bumper?

Lexus publishes a document with simple measurements that lay out the radiation range, the area in front of the radar sensor. It takes just a few minutes to mark on the bumper cover.

Inside that zone, damage isn’t repairable, and that includes blending paint. If you’re planning to blend the bumper cover, that area is off-limits.

One thing that trips people up: Toyota and Lexus also mark the radiation range on the backside of the bumper. The inside zone is smaller than the outside, so mask it off before painting to keep overspray out.

Know the zone before you touch the bumper.

What’s service mode, and why does it matter when your vehicle comes in for repair?

On this Lexus TX, connecting the Lexus scan tool through the OBD port puts the vehicle into service mode, which blocks communication in both directions.

On your end, you won’t get flooded with error alerts or service notifications on your app while components are disconnected during the repair.

On our end, it stops the app from sending commands to the vehicle while it’s being worked on, so there are no remote starts and no self-parking attempts.

It protects the vehicle, the technician, and your peace of mind.
