Money Island News:

The NJ DEP Coastal Management Program is working through Rutgers University to gather input from working waterfront communities like ours to shape state policy through 2030. Money Island's next major projects are expected after 2030. Until then, we are focused on smaller sustainability projects. We participated in a detailed reinvestment and resources survey earlier this year and have a follow-up session scheduled today.

Money Island is recognized in regional and state planning documents as a port for reinvestment, not strategic retreat. That matters, and now we need to make sure our local voices are heard. What issues matter most to YOU? Flooding? Storm resistance? Permit barriers? Seawall, sewer, and infrastructure investment? Recreational use or support for visitors? Drop your thoughts in the comments. We want to bring your concerns to the table.

Sharing this very old arial photo of Avalon just to show the usual early stage progression of shoreline sustainability infrastructure. Notice the seawall on one vulnerable side and not the other. Right now the focus is on a seawall at the end of the Money Island Road to wrap around to Bayview Road, like the rounded wall shown here, that will protect the deep water channel and stop further land and roadway erosion. Once the seawall, elevated roadway and water/sewer projects are complete, then we will likely see further private investment. Until then, the arial view will remain as it has been for almost 20 years. This photo is older. A current photo would show more erosion of seawall and roadway. At the current pace of investment, it will be after 2030 that we see noticeable improvement in erosion control. Local government wants fast action, but federal funding has been historically slow.

Fishing club?
Over the past few days we've received feedback that there might be interest in reviving a fishing club here. If you might be interested, please send a message. It's not the type of thing to paste on social media.

It’s just discussion at this point, but NJDOT might play a larger role in Money Island’s future than any other government agency. Perhaps even more than NJDEP because of their connection to national funding for the intercostal waterway.

The Coast Guard called in advance of the storm to ask if we had anyone living permanently on boats. We do not, but I thanked them for checking. Interesting that they have not done this before. Does anyone know why?
