Shopping for a used SUV?

The lowest price, newest year or lowest mileage doesn’t automatically make a vehicle the right choice

Before you buy, take a closer look at these 5 areas:

1. HISTORY REPORT

Review reported accidents or damage, title status and previous ownership

A vehicle history report is valuable information, but it shouldn’t be the only thing you rely on

2. SERVICE RECORDS

Maintenance history can tell you a lot about how a vehicle was treated

Look for regular oil changes, brake and tire work and documentation of major repairs or service

A higher-mileage SUV with consistent maintenance may sometimes make more sense than a lower-mileage vehicle that was neglected

3. START IT COLD

Before you test drive a used car, take 60 seconds and look around it

A quick inspection won’t tell you everything about the vehicle — but it can help you notice things that deserve a closer look

Here are 5 simple checks:

1. TIRES

Look at the tread depth and pay attention to how evenly the tires are wearing

Uneven wear may be worth investigating further

2. UNDER THE CAR

Take a quick look underneath the vehicle and at the ground where it was parked

Fresh fluid spots or visible leaks are something you’ll want to understand before making a decision

3. BODY GAPS

Look at the gaps around:

• Hood
• Trunk
• Fenders
