27% of Americans Have Stolen Something at Self-Checkout

Retail theft in the United States
More than a quarter of Americans admit to having stolen something at a self-checkout register. In a survey carried out by LendingTree in October of 2025, 27 percent said they had ever intentionally taken an item at a self-checkout without paying. More than a third of respondents said they had unintentionally taken something without scanning it.

Members of Gen Z as well as Millennials are most likely to have stolen something intentionally, at between 37 percent and 41 percent admitting to it as part of the survey. Gen X members and Baby Boomers are much less likely to say they swiped something from the store.

A study by retail technology company Grabango recently found that self-checkout registers cost stores on average 3.5 percent of sales. Despite the low number, this still translates to millions of dollars for larger retailers, prompting many of them to take action against self-checkout theft. Of course, retailers are also saving personnel costs when deploying self-checkout terminals.

Difficulty affording the items in question and price increases are the most cited reasons, given by almost half of those who stole something at self-checkout for each case. This is followed, at 39 percent, by prices feeling unfair or too high in general and, at 35 percent, by self-checkout feeling like a task customers should reimburse themselves for. 29 percent find that the harm seems minimal at larger stores, while 21 percent say the chance of being caught is low and between 14 percent and 17 percent say negative experiences at the store in question made them justify the behavior. 13 percent say they started by copying friends and family. The survey also found that men were twice as likely as women to admit to self-checkout theft.

A federal ex*****on scheduled for December 3 by the Trump administration has caused controversy due to the announcement that the event would be livestreamed. On Thursday, the White House canceled plans for the live coverage of the firing squad ex*****on of Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people in a mass shooting at the Hort Hood army post in Texas in 2009. Still, the initial announcement caused shock among many Americans as well as people around the world and brought the issue of still rare federal ex*****ons back into the spotlight.

Data collected by the Death Penalty Information Center shows that federal ex*****ons were carried out only infrequently throughout the 20th century and became even fewer and further between after the reinstatement of the federal death penalty in 1988. This changed when the first Trump administration at the end of its term ordered the ex*****on of 13 federal inmates in the span of just six months between July 2020 and January 2021. Hasan’s is the first federal ex*****on scheduled in Trump’s second term and would also the first of military ex*****on in more than 60 years due to his status as an army major. After commutations by President Joe Biden, there are only three people left on federal death row including Boston marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, even though some are fighting their commutations in order to continue proving their declared innocence. Four are on military death row, including Hasan.

While public ex*****ons have been a thing of the past for a long time in the United States, prison personnel, family members of both the victim and the perpetrator, spiritual and legal council as well as selected media representatives can usually attend them. Several states require official citizen witnesses to watch ex*****ons as a stand-in for the general public, although changes to these laws are ongoing amid pushback against ex*****ons becoming too closed off to the public.

NPR reports that President Donald Trump changed his mind about the livestream by being convinced that it would go against American values and additionally could feed Islamist propaganda due to Nidal Hasan’s status as an army major turned violent Islamist.

Tesla is set to unveil its new Roadster today, marking a return to the company’s roots. The very first vehicle Tesla ever sold was an electric sports car of this type. While the first-generation Roadster was produced between 2008 and 2012, the new so-called second-generation model is actually a brand new vehicle and the first totally new car Tesla has debuted in a long time.

Data from Statista Consumer Insights suggests that the Roadster 2.0 is unlikely to see mass market sales, however. In the United States, only 4 percent of respondents who have a car in their household drive a sports car, such as an Audi TT or a Porsche 911. Respondents in Canada and the United Kingdom have a stronger affinity for sports cars, albeit at a still low 5.6–5.7 percent fitting into the survey's owner category. Even the figure for Italy, the home of high-performance brands like Ferrari and Maserati, stands at less than three percent. For comparison, the predecessor Roadster model was only made approximately 2,450 times by Tesla.

Tesla has been hit with criticism over its strategy as investors and observers question its focus on niche releases like the Roadster and the Cybertruck, while competitors have been preparing a slew of new models to innovate and democratize EV markets globally. CEO Elon Musk had announced the new Roadster generation back in 2017, with production originally slated to begin as early as 2020.

Consumers want tangible benefits when signing up to an online rewards program, a survey by Statista Consumer Insights has shown. 41 percent of surveyed Americans say that free shipping is among the best things such a program can offer, addressing one of the main pain points in online shopping. Only 22 percent pick free returns or an extended return window as one of the most important aspects of a loyalty program, potentially because free returns are a feature often already included for all customers.

Another tangible asset that many consumers want out of a loyalty membership is cashback benefits, with 36 percent of surveyed U.S. respondents agreeing on this aspect. This is followed in rank three at 31 percent by free gifts, bonus products or discounts down the line, more features that give shoppers direct savings or a freebie delivered to their door. While 23 percent want a birthday gift or bonus, more wanted a free gift just because. Comparable to the demand for birthday gifts was the desire for exclusive access to products or early sales, at 22-23 percent, respectively.

At 21 percent saying this was an important aspect, points-to-discount conversions are not tickling shoppers’ instant gratification needs as much. Neither were tiered rewards and status levels (16 percent) or personalized recommendations (15 percent).

Worldwide cancer drug sales are already way ahead of other drug classes and the revenue generated by them is expected to grow even larger over the coming years. This is according to data by Statista Market Insights.

Oncology drugs are reaching $232.5 billion in sales in 2026, more than double that of the next item on the list, anti-diabetic drugs at almost $93 billion. As GLP-1 shots developed for diabetes but used for weight loss are booming, the segment experienced another push and overtook vaccines, which are expected to earn $65.5 billion dollars in sales this year, down from peaks during the coronvirus pandemic. Another drug class growing in sales are immunosuppresants, expected to bring in revenues of $72 billion this year. Psychiatric drugs are meanwhile expected to become the seventh-biggest drug class globally, up from the eighth-biggest currently.

By 2031, cancer drug sales are expected to reach $311 billion annually. Considering worldwide drug sales, cancer drugs are expected to approach 20 percent of the market that year.

Cancer drugs are extremely pricey and therefore generate high revenues, with the cost of cancer treatment at above $100,000 per patient. Cancer rates themselves are also rising due to longer lifespans. Money funneled into cancer research means new medications are released, which improves cancer treatment but likely also increases its price as pharmaceutical companies charge a premium for newly researched and released drugs.

The IMF upgraded global growth prospects for 2026 slightly after downgrading them in their last two forecasts, saying it expects the global economy to grow by 3.1 percent this year. In July, this projection had stood at 3.0 percent. While the upgrade is slight, it still is a hopeful note counterbalancing negative outlooks on the current state of global affairs often described as polycrisis.

As shocks from the Iran war persist, driving up the price of energy and other traded goods, disinflation has stalled and financial markets continue to be at risk of negative reactions. The IMF saw a positive aspect in the global AI boom, creating an increase in demand for related technologies, as well as the global economy's ability to adapt. At the same time, the organization cautioned that a change of course in the global AI build-out could prove detrimental to the economic growth.

Countries upgraded since the last forecast are India, the United Kingdom and Germany. However, countries where economic growth is paper-thin and decreasing are Russia, France and Japan. All three are expected to grow by only 0.4–0.9 percent each this year. This same number stood at just 1.1 percent for the Euro Area as well as Canada, giving rise to some doubts around the economic prospects of developed countries in general. While the IMF previously said that the global economy weathered the current shocks "better than feared", it now added that the margins of resilience were "not limitless".

According to the IMF, the rise in renewable energy use was making economies less vulnerable to elevated energy prices which are currently an issue. The AI boom also helped some countries and territories to achieve better economic growth numbers, but this was mostly limited to Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia.

The IMF concludes that worst-case scenarios did not turn into reality but that big risks persist as both peace in the Middle East and gains from the AI boom remain fragile. It also cautions that trade tensions could resurface as a result of war-induced shortages, which would put an additional damper on the economy.

As more and more people lean on chatbots for comfort and guidance, experts have raised alarms over the potential pitfalls: erosion of social skills, unhealthy attachment to digital companions offering synthetic (i.e. fake) empathy, unvetted advice and the risk that vulnerable users might substitute professional help with AI tools. When it comes to safeguarding individuals who use AI for emotional well-being, however, users and non-users hold distinctly different priorities.

According to a survey conducted by Mental Health America between May 2025 and July 2026, frequent users of AI for emotional support are primarily concerned with confidentiality. A leading 22 percent of regular users believe companies must ensure no one else can see their conversations, while 12 percent want guarantees that private chats won't be used to train models. At the same time, 15 percent want companies to clearly disclose the emotional risks of using AI and 12 percent think chatbots should refer users to human professionals rather than dispensing advice. Notably, 12 percent of users would prefer the technology to feel even more human-like.

Non-users, on the other hand, take a far more cautious approach. A quarter of non-users argue that AI should strictly refer people to mental health professionals instead of giving guidance, and 19 percent emphasize the need for overt reminders that users are speaking to software, not a human. Only 11 percent of non-users advocate for industry impact standards, with an equal share wanting AI to feel less human-like.
