Had to leave NYC for some cheaper gas…

Been driving the G 500 here and there for a couple of weeks so it’s finally time for its first real fill up. A 20 gallon tank that only takes premium fuel is bound to be expensive… but honestly not as expensive as I thought!

Drove the most beautiful road in the world in the Ferrari Amalfi. Still dreaming of it

How is a car like this road legal?

I stopped by in Los Angeles to check out the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento they have on site: one of around ten ever produced, and one of only two that’s certified for the street.

In 2011, this car was impossible. Loosely based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, it’s imbued with technology from the aerospace industry, and it was the first car to feature forged carbon fiber, which you can see absolutely everywhere. The interior is just a padded carbon tub, with no dashboard or digital aids. The exterior components are all carbon too, down to the exhaust tips and the wheels. Even the suspension is constructed from carbon, so the Sesto Elemento weighs just under one tonne, making it lighter than a Mazda Miata.

All of them were built for track use only, but in England offers a road legal conversion, and this one had the work done. With that, you get an AC system, a front axle lift, indicators, license plate brackets — it isn’t much, but it makes it registrable, and there’s definitely allure to having a road legal race car.

The Sesto Elemento was one of my childhood superheroes, and fifteen years later, it’s just as exciting.

The most beautiful place on earth, in the Ferrari Amalfi

Ferrari’s entry point doesn’t need to prove itself.

Over the last couple days, I’ve been driving the Ferrari Amalfi around Northern California, and it’s so much more than a refreshed Roma.

It’s comfortable, but it isn’t tame — at your fingertips is 631 horsepower, produced by a twin-turbo V8, and at your back are optional messaging seats. You won’t find any gaping vents or intakes, but instead smooth lines and a hidden rear spoiler. Look closely and you’ll see some carbon, but it isn’t much, and I love how this car isn’t in your face.

On Highway 1, it’s all you need — nimble handling, punchy pedal response, high revs – it’s a thrill to drive, especially in sport mode with manual shifting. It is a grand tourer, so there are two rear seats, but don’t expect to fit much in them, and you get all the creature comforts you could possibly need, like Apple CarPlay and a cup holder.

What are your thoughts on the Amalfi?

I just bought a Mercedes G-Wagon!

This is my new-to-me 1999 Mercedes-Benz G 500, and it’s the short wheelbase version, which means it only has three doors instead of five. We never (officially) got these in the United States so I imported mine from Japan, where the previous owner covered over 100,000km in nearly 30 years.

It’s finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic over a black leather interior, and it’s got the G 55 wheels on it, which I wrapped in some beefier all-terrain tires. Under the hood is the legendary naturally aspirated M113 V8 — one of the greatest engines of all time.

If you know me, you know how much I love the short wheel base G-Wagon, so I can’t believe I finally have one to call my own, and an excellent example at that. It does still need a little bit of work, so follow along as I get it ready for its new life in New York City.

New England’s most beautiful car show?

I stopped by The Gathering in Newport, Rhode Island — one of the most prestigious events during Audrain Concours & Motor Week and Motor Week. It’s hosted at Doris Duke’s Rough Point, which is a Gilded Age oceanfront mansion on Bellevue Avenue.

The cars in attendance were just as breathtaking — which is your favorite?

You just gained access to 40 billion dollars. What’s the first thing you do?

Well, if you said commission a fully custom Ferrari, you wouldn’t be the first, because a Bruneian prince beat you to it. This is a 1995 Ferrari FX, one of the only bespoke builds to ever escape Brunei, and you can see it for free at the Marconi Automotive Museum (Marconi Automotive Museum).

Prince Abdul Hakeem wanted something special. Nephew to the Sultan, it’s rumored that he spent around $22 million bringing this project to life, and he had one very specific request: the resulting car had to be semi-automatic. Pininfarina had their work cut out for them because, at the time, those transmissions were reserved for race cars, but they partnered up with ProDrive to make a first pass at it.

Underneath the bodywork, it’s a Ferrari 512M, powered by the same 4.9 liter flat-12, and you can see Abdul Hakeem’s initials behind the door. The ProDrive transmission was plagued with problems, so the FXs were set to be shipped to Williams, where they’d be fitted with an upgraded F1 sequential. But of the seven units produced, this is the only one that made it.

FX number four was at Williams during the Asian financial crisis of 1997, which forced the royal family to cut it loose completely. It was subsequently purchased by Dick Marconi and is now on display at the Marconi Auto Museum as the only FX to escape Brunei.
