No crosswalk. Mid-block, someone steps off the curb right in front of you. Do you have to stop? No, they are jaywalking and you have the right of way? Yes, slow or stop? Or only in a school zone?

Yes. They are in the wrong: outside a crosswalk the pedestrian must yield to traffic. But that never lets you hit them. The California Vehicle Code says the rule does not relieve the driver of the duty to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian on the roadway, and the Florida handbook says it is the motorist's responsibility to do everything possible to avoid colliding with a pedestrian. Slow down or stop, then go when they are clear.

If your teen holds a Provisional Operator's Permit in Nebraska, here's the rule that catches families out.

A POP holder generally can't drive unsupervised between 12 midnight and 6 a.m. One exception: driving to or from work, or to or from a school activity. Outside those two purposes in those hours, a parent, guardian, or a licensed driver who is at least 21 has to be in the car.

The written test draws from exactly that kind of state-specific material. It's 25 questions with an 80% pass mark, and it leans on rural road and farm equipment situations more than coastal states do, which is the part generic practice apps skip.

DMV Ready has free Nebraska practice questions in the same format, no signup.

Parents, did you know about the midnight rule?

The small yellow square under a curve sign is an Advisory Speed plaque, and almost nobody can tell you whether you'll be ticketed for ignoring it.

California answers it directly. The Caltrans manual for setting speed limits says a driver may not be cited solely for exceeding the posted value of an advisory speed sign, but may be cited if exceeding it creates a problem. So the advisory number isn't the charge. The basic speed law is, the one saying you can't ever drive faster than is safe for conditions. Take a 35 mph advisory curve at 55, slide over the center line, and the plaque helps prove the case.

Three rules worth keeping: the posted number is always a multiple of 5, the plaque never stands alone, and outside emergencies it comes from an engineering study.

California permit questions probe that recommendation-versus-law line, while Pennsylvania and New York lean harder on symbol recognition, so that's two different study habits. DMV Ready covers both.

Red light. You are on a one-way street, turning left onto another one-way street. Can you turn? Never on red? Yes, after a full stop, unless a sign says no? Or only if nobody is behind you?

Yes. From a one-way street onto a one-way street, a red light works like a right turn on red: come to a complete stop, yield to pedestrians and traffic, then turn left, unless a sign prohibits it. That is the California Vehicle Code and the Florida handbook. Most states allow it; a few states and New York City do not, so check your handbook.

Louisiana runs a 40 question permit test and asks for 80% right, which works out to 32. Miss nine and you're coming back another day.

The questions come straight out of the Louisiana driver handbook, and a good share of them are right-of-way scenarios: who goes first at an uncontrolled intersection, who yields turning left. Louisiana also has handbook rules the generic practice apps don't cover, so a one-size-fits-all study app leaves gaps right where the test is hardest.

Two Louisiana specifics worth knowing before you walk in: the learner's permit for a Class E starts at 15, and the vision standard at the counter is 20/40.

There are six free sample questions on the page in the real Louisiana format, plus a cheat sheet. No signup. DMV Ready has the rest of the question bank if you want to keep drilling.

If you're moving to a new state this fall, the license swap has a clock on it, and it's shorter than most people assume.

California gives new residents 10 days. Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and Washington give 30. Texas and Illinois give 90. South Carolina sits at an odd 45 days, which is why so many moving checklists print the wrong number for that one. Arizona and Utah publish no grace period at all, so the duty starts the moment you meet their residency test.

Here's the part people miss. Once your new state issues a license, the old one gets cancelled automatically through a state-to-state verification system. Your plates, registration and insurance are not covered by that. Those stay your job, and a few states will act against an old registration you leave open.

Every deadline in the guide came straight from that state's own agency page. DMV Ready put them in one table so you don't have to chase them.

A school bus has stopped on the other side of a divided highway, red lights flashing and stop arm out. Do you stop, because flashing reds always mean stop? Keep going, because a median separates you? Or stop only if you see kids?

You keep going. A raised median or barrier separates the roadways, so the children are not crossing to your side. Slow down, watch, and continue. On a two-lane road with no median, every lane stops. That is the rule in the California, Texas and Florida handbooks. One exception: in New York you must stop for a school bus even across a divided highway.
