Driving in the dark:

Daylight Saving Time will soon come to an end, and with that many will find themselves spending more time driving in the dark. It would be beneficial to your new driver if you’d spend some time driving with them after dark. Depth perception, color recognition and peripheral vision can be compromised as well as dealing with the glare of headlights from oncoming vehicles and animals darting into the roadway. The temporary blindness that can occur can make a significant impact on whether one can avoid a crash. While only 25% of our driving is done at night, it accounts for 50% of traffic related deaths.

Let’s help them get off to a good year

There are scores of safety matters to pay attention to, as school gets back in session, but one often overlooked bit of advice is to be prepared for kids to appear in unexpected places. Regardless of age, kids get into a hurry for fear of being late and may run out from between parked cars or areas where there is no crosswalk and if they’re on bikes, prepare for them to turn in front of you without looking or signaling. They don’t want to be late so the thing that goes through their mind is “I don’t want to get in trouble” instead of thinking of safety.

In a year where everything seems to turn to suck, it is hard to find things to be thankful for. Trust me, I, as well as so many others who try to put on a smile and stick with it each day, am struggling with the same questions and concerns everyone else has. But through it all I want to express my sincerest gratitude to all the parents and students who have been so understanding as we also navigate this (insert favorite adjective) year. Yes, there is increased short temperateness, less tolerance and heightened anxiety for all. My words of advice are this: Hold on - nothing is a surprise to God and He still has it all under control even though we may not see or understand it (thank you Carmen). And because of that, I am thankful for each of you that has helped us continue to prevail and succeed, and my prayer is that each of you find something to be truly grateful for, in spite of any challenges you faced or are facing.

From our staff - Happy Thanksgiving

As I return from a much needed vacation that, as always, is NEVER near long enough, I realized a few things while driving 3,000 miles. One, the world isn’t nearly as horrible as the news makes it out to be; two, people are as friendly as you are to them; and three, drivers and driving habits are the same all across the United States. The third leads me to this; wherever you drive you must use caution. Attention shortfalls, impatience, and bad habits are always going to be something you new drivers will have to learn to adjust to. We do our best to persuade you to be focused on driving safely and its importance. Not everyone stays focused. The longer you are behind the wheel the more likely you’ll have lapses in attention. When that happens you need to stop at a safe location and regroup. Nap if you must, but don’t start driving again until you are clear headed and ready to react to those who don’t take the same advice. School is starting and many of you will be driving there, ALONE, for the first time. Focus on being safe, NOT on looking cool. Be safe kids, none of us want to read about you in the paper or see the prayer requests on Facebook due to a poor driving decision. You matter to all of us.

Finally, an answer although not necessarily a convenient one. The Coshocton Driving Exam site is permanently closed. As of now the closest sites to take your in-car driving test is Newark or Zanesville. I have no information about the New Philadelphia exam site at this moment. Schedule online at www.Ohiodrivingtest.com. It’s easier to just fill out section one or call the 800 number. You can also choose a county to see if they are testing when you log in to schedule.

For your protection, your session will time out after 20 minutes. Any items in your cart will be lost. To stay logged in, click "I'm still here" or your session will be terminated.

Driving Exam Update: As far as I can understand, they are planning to start testing on June 12. HOWEVER, I do not know if all exams sites are going to be in operation. My suggestion is to keep checking at ohiodrivingtest.com by entering your student's information into section one and then following the prompts. As we hear more we will continue to post.

As of 9am today (May 21, 2020) the exam sites have NOT been opened or started scheduling. We have no idea when they will do so. They are separate from the BMV, which has confused some in this process. If we get any updates we will post it as soon as we hear.
