Happy 74th Birthday, Phil Collins! 🎉
celebrated turning 74—and what an incredible journey it has been, from your early days drumming for Genesis to becoming one of pop music’s most enduring voices and songwriters.
A Few Highlights of Your Unforgettable Career
Genesis’s Driving Force (1970s): You joined Genesis in 1970, first as a drummer and soon stepping into the frontman role after Peter Gabriel’s departure. Your distinctive drum fills and emotive vocals on tracks like “Follow You Follow Me” (1978) helped transition Genesis from progressive rock into a more accessible, chart-topping band, setting the stage for their worldwide success.
Solo Breakthrough & Iconic Hits (1980s): Your 1981 solo debut, Face Value, introduced the world to “In the Air Tonight,” whose haunting drum break and raw emotion became an instant classic. That same decade saw you top the charts with “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” (1984) and “Sussudio” (1985), proving you were as compelling a solo artist as you were a bandmate. Your knack for blending heartfelt lyricism with memorable melodies defined an era of adult contemporary and pop music.
Crossover Composer & Film Work: Beyond pop, you demonstrated remarkable versatility scoring films such as Buster (1988), for which you crafted both the soundtrack and songs that captured the film’s period spirit, and Tarzan (1999), earning an Academy Award for Best Original Song with “You’ll Be in My Heart.” Your ability to convey story and emotion through instrumental themes has touched audiences far beyond the rock and pop worlds.
Later Projects & Reunion Tours (2000s–2020s): After health challenges led to your retirement from live drumming in 2009, you continued to record and release music—Both Sides (1993) and Testify (2002) among them—as well as collaborating with other artists (notably the charity single “Easy Lover” with Philip Bailey). In 2020, you reunited with Genesis members Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks for The Last Domino? tour, giving fans one more chance to experience that signature blend of progressive roots and pop sensibility.
