Ever wonder why your mechanic tells you to use low gear at slow speeds? This is why.

See this groove on the primary clutch sheave? It is not supposed to be there. This sheave should be perfectly smooth from the bearing all the way out to the edge. This groove is cause by the belt slipping on the sheave face which is caused either by water intrusion or excessive load on the driveline. When using high gear at slow speeds where there is a lot of stop and go, everytime you take off, the belt is slipping on the clutch. This will eventually cause burn spots on the belt and cut a groove into the clutch. If you drive like this all the time, you will eat up a lot of belts and this groove WILL go all the way through the sheave making your primary clutch a nice paperweight.

How do you prevent this?
Only use high gear at high speeds (driving down the pavement, gravel or high speed trail riding). If you are not in any of these situations your machine should be in low gear!
Also if you get water in your belt cover, drain it immediately using the drain plug (which most SXS's have) and once the water is drained, rev the machine up a few times, in neutral or park, with the drain plug out.
