This cold weather is not fun and guess what it can make driving less fun. Here are a few tips for the sub-zero temps we are having....
1. Battery - check your battery, perform a volt test to make sure your battery is up to par.
2. Wipers - Be sure to have good wipers to combat road spray and ice on the windshield while driving
3. Idling - Let your car idle for around 1-2 minutes only. 10 minutes is too long and is not great for your engine or gas consumption. Idle just long enough to get the fluids moving.
4. Tires - a decrease of just 10 degrees can decrease your tires up to 10% of pressure. Check your recommended pressure settings for your vehicle.
5. Gas - Try not to let your tank go below 1/2 tank in sub-zero temps. Moisture in the tank can get into your fuel lines and freeze...This can cause many problems. Fill'er Up!
6. Frozen Locks and Doors - If your locks are frozen, you can use a tiny bit of hand sanitizer on your key to melt the ice in your lock. If your doors freeze, you can use warm water around the door to free it, but be sure to dry it completely once opened and coat the rubber seals with silicone to prevent future freezing. Also, never use hot water to clear a window or windshield - it can crack!
