A one of a kind space age concept car built by Ghia of Italy in 1955. It influenced Mercury's mass-produced Turnpike Cruisers from 1957 to 1959.

◆ The 1956 Mercury XM-Turnpike Cruiser is a one-of-a-kind space-age concept car. It was built in 1955 by Ghia of Italy for the Mercury division of Ford. The design was meant to celebrate the booming American Interstate Highway System. It looked like nothing else on the road.

◆ The concept car heavily influenced the styling of mass-produced Mercury Turnpike Cruisers from 1957 to 1959. Features like the reverse-slant rear window and dramatic tailfins first appeared on this show car. It was a vision of the future that actually made it to production.

◆ The XM-Turnpike Cruiser remains a unique piece of automotive history. One car. One year. A design that helped shape an era of American driving.

A stack of cardboard boxes becomes a skyscraper, a fortress, a spaceship, whatever we decide it is that day. A sheet flutters on the line like a flag claiming this whole yard as ours. The sun's golden, time moves slow, and nobody's checking their phone because nobody has one. We didn't need much back then. A box, some imagination, and maybe a sibling or two to argue with about the rules we made up on the spot. Now kids scroll through videos of other people having fun while the boxes sit flat in the recycling bin. We knew something they're missing. We were the entertainment.

Grease on his hands, love in his heart.

The sun beats down, dust kicks up around your ankles, and that old mower rattles beneath your palms like it's got a mind of its own. Your shoulders burn. Your shirt sticks to your back. But you keep pushing because that's what you did, you earned what you got. Back then, we didn't scroll through a screen to make our money. We showed up. We sweated through it. The neighborhood knew who was reliable because they could see it. A clean yard meant respect. It meant next week's job was already waiting. Now? Kids ask their parents for fifty bucks like they're asking for air. We ground our kids and they think it's a punishment. We know the difference between having something handed to you and actually building something with your own two hands. Those calluses meant something. Still do.
