The crazy genius of old-school invention. In this 1930s photo, three men turn a regular sedan into a water car — placing it on a wooden raft of planks and oil drums for floating.

The real innovation? They connected the car's rear wheel to a propeller, and the spare steering wheel at the back to a rudder. So the engine powers the boat, and you steer it from behind. Pure DIY amphibious vehicle.

No factory. No fancy labs. Just imagination and courage — a homemade car-boat, tested on the river while onlookers watch in awe.

Proof that innovation needs imagination, not money.

Memorial of St. Henry Newman
Memorial of St. Dennis

Today, October 9, the Church remembers St. John Henry Newman and St. Denis. One was a bishop who preached in third-century Gaul and gave his life for Christ. The other was an English priest and scholar who left behind his comfort, his reputation, and many friendships to follow the truth into the Catholic Church.

Their lives were centuries apart, but both teach me the same thing: faith sometimes costs us something. Newman's motto was "Cor ad cor loquitur," or "Heart speaks to heart." I'm asking them both to help me love the truth, speak it with charity, and stay faithful even when it's hard.

St. John Henry Newman and St. Denis, pray for us!
