Look Back: The MUGEN CR-Z GT Hybrid Era
When we talk about pushing the boundaries of motorsport engineering and testing new technologies on the track, this machine is a perfect example of how ahead of the curve the Honda and Mugen partnership has always been.

Back on July 4, 2012, Honda officially announced its technical partnership with Team Mugen (M-TEC Co., Ltd.) to campaign the wild MUGEN CR-Z GT in the notoriously competitive GT300 class of the SUPER GT Series.

What made this build so legendary wasn’t just the aggressive widebody aero—it was the powertrain. Honda supplied a mid-mounted 2.8-liter V6 twin-turbo engine paired seamlessly with a bespoke racing hybrid system developed exclusively for the Team Mugen chassis. Long before hybrid powertrains became the standard in top-tier global endurance racing, Honda and Mugen were already out there validating the technology under brutal race conditions.

After a series of shakedowns and test runs, the car made its highly anticipated competitive debut just weeks later, hitting the grid at the 2012 SUPER GT Series Round 4 SUGO GT 300km Race on July 28-29.

The GT300 CR-Z Recipe:
• Engine: 2.8-liter V6 Twin-Turbo
• Assist: Exclusive Honda Racing Hybrid System
• Chassis: MUGEN CR-Z GT (SUPER GT GT300 Class)
