πCar not starting? π»
Here are some common reasons why, and some helpful information everyone should know if they operate a vehicle. Knowing these things can sometimes even help you to prevent further damage to your car's engine.
The following list is just an idea of some of the more common issues.
1. Bad Fuel Pump: A faulty fuel pump might struggle to circulate fuel through the fuel line to the engine, causing your vehicle not to start. Hearing a loud whining noise when your engine is running can be a sign of a malfunctioning pump. Sometimes its louder in the location of your gas tank.
2. Bad Spark Plugs: In order for the plugs to ignite the fuel charge in each cylinder they need to be hot. Plugs that are not getting hot will prevent combustion and expansion of the burning mixture, thus keeping the engine from starting.
3. Bad Timing Belt: A timing belt that stretches or breaks will prevent a car from starting. Continuing to crank the engine can cause bigger issues such as brining the valves into contact with the piston. This can cause serious engine damage and should be avoided at all costs!
4. Bad Ignition Coil: Your engine needs spark. Without spark your car will not start. Without a functional coil to step up the voltage, there can be no spark.
5. Faulty Cam or Crank Sensor: If the sensors are faulty, they will either provide no information to the ignition system or will provide incorrect data. Either way, the engine will not fire.
6. Bad Battery: Batteries have a finite lifespan and can go dead for various reasons. Also, the terminals can loosen or corrode causing the battery to lose its connection and preventing the power your vehicle needs to operate. A failing battery can put a strain on the alternator so it's important to also have the alternator checked as well.
7. Bad Starter: Sometimes this is obvious from the response to the key. (You will most likely hear what sounds like grinding or clicking.) If nothing at all happens when you turn the key, the starter may have reached the end of its life span. Avoid repetitively trying to start your car, because if this is not the initial problem, you can actually kill the starter by persistent cranking.
8. Ignition Switch: One of the most important parts of your vehicle! Who would have thought that such a small part can cause such a big issue! This switch powers up every electronic device in your car. Inside the ignition switch there is an electrical part connecting circuits when you turn the key. Faulty contacts or a problem with the wiring will keep the vehicle from starting.
9. Bad Alternator: The alternator is responsible for providing electricity to power your cars battery and other components. Your battery provides the initial charge of energy needed to start your car, but the alternator is responsible for keeping the battery charged, which in turn helps keeps your car running.
Remember, prevention is better than cure!! By keeping an eye on your vehicles overall performance and addressing issues promptly, you can prolong its lifespan and ensure your vehicle stays in tip top shape. ππππ
