The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is one of the biggest yacht shows in the world — and with hundreds of yachts on display, having a plan makes all the difference.

Offshore powerboat racing has always had a rebellious streak — and some of its history was written far beyond the racecourse.

In the 1970s and ’80s, the same qualities that made offshore boats formidable racing machines — huge horsepower, high-speed hulls and the ability to cover serious distance across open water — also made them attractive to drug smugglers running between the Caribbean and South Florida.

Builders pushed the limits. Engines became more powerful. Hulls became faster. And the line between offshore racing, performance boating and the era’s infamous “cigarette boats” became part of powerboat folklore.

Today, the contraband is gone — but the obsession with speed certainly isn’t.
