MYTH: Driving in 4WD or AWD has no effect on fuel economy.

REALITY: Engaging four-wheel drive can increase fuel consumption. Extra drivetrain friction, rotating components, and drag require more energy from the engine. The effect can be even greater when a 4x4 is equipped with added weight and all-terrain tires.

If you drive a part-time 4WD vehicle, leave the system in 2WD on dry pavement. This can help improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary drivetrain stress. Engage 4WD when conditions truly require it, such as snow, mud, ice, or loose gravel.

AWD vehicles are designed to operate with all four wheels engaged, so smooth driving and consistent maintenance are especially important. Worn or neglected transfer-case and differential fluids can also increase drivetrain losses, making fluid service important for both efficiency and long-term component life.
