Mazda's Skyactiv-X is a seriously impressive engine system. It uses what's called homogeneous charge compression ignition, where a tiny bit of air and fuel ignites to compress the main charge. The main charge then spontaneously ignites, like inside a diesel engine. The initial ignition comes from a spark plug, and Mazda calls it Spark Controlled Compression Ignition.

Mazda may have found a way to keep its Skyactiv-X compression ignition system alive with a surprising two-plug twist.
