"Ford 300 straight 6. The rest of the truck will rot away before you ruin one of them." That's not marketing copy. That's what owners say. And they're not exaggerating.

The Ford 300 cubic inch inline-six was introduced for the 1965 model year in the F-Series. It was based on the smaller 240 cubic inch six, sharing the identical 4.00-inch bore but extending the stroke to 3.98 inches. 300.1 cubic inches. Nearly square. Built at the Cleveland Engine Plant in Brook Park, Ohio. Ford produced over 4 million of them across a 31-year production run ending in 1996. It was the last inline-six gasoline engine offered in a Ford car or light truck in North America.

What made the 300 special wasn't power. Initial gross rating was 170 horsepower. By the smog-era mid-1970s, it had dropped to 119 net horsepower. By the end of production with electronic fuel injection, it peaked at 150 net horsepower. These are numbers that wouldn't impress anyone on a spec sheet. But the torque told the real story. 260 lb-ft at 2,000 RPM. Ninety percent of peak torque available at just 1,200 RPM. The engine didn't need to rev to work. It just pulled. From idle.

Two engineering decisions made the 300 nearly indestructible. First: seven main bearings. In an inline-six, having a main bearing between every crankshaft throw dramatically reduces crankshaft flex. This is over-engineering typically reserved for diesel or industrial applications. Seven main bearings distributed the load so evenly that bearing wear became almost a non-issue over the life of the engine.

Second: a gear-driven camshaft. No timing chain. No timing belt. Gears. Direct gear-to-gear contact between crank and cam. Timing chains stretch. Timing belts break. Gears don't. The valve timing on a Ford 300 stayed consistent after 200,000 miles, after 300,000 miles, after the odometer stopped mattering. This is the feature that fleet mechanics loved most. One fewer thing that could fail. One fewer scheduled replacement.

The cast iron block weighed between 500 and 550 pounds. Heavy. But that mass absorbed heat and vibration. The block shared its bellhousing pattern with the 302 and 351 Windsor V8s, which meant swapping a V8 into a 300-equipped truck was straightforward. Ironically, this ease of transplant is why many 300 engines were pulled from trucks. Not because they failed. Because owners wanted more horsepower. The 300 went into the garage on a stand, still running, while a 351 took its place.

The engine powered everything. F-100s, F-150s, F-250s. Broncos from 1966 to 1996. E-Series vans from 1965 through 1996 or 1997. Beyond vehicles: dump trucks weighing up to 20,000 pounds, UPS delivery vans, generators, woodchippers, airport tugs, agricultural equipment, marine engines, and tractors. Heavy-duty variants received forged crankshafts, forged rods, HD exhaust manifolds, and steel cam gears instead of fiber. These HD manifolds are now sought after by enthusiasts because their high-flow design makes turbocharger retrofitting easy.

In 1987, Ford introduced electronic fuel injection to the 300, creating the 4.9L EFI version. Smoother cold starts, better drivability, cleaner emissions, and the same bottom-end strength. The EFI update extended the engine's relevance into the mid-1990s, long after most American manufacturers had abandoned inline sixes for V6 designs.

The Ford 300 was replaced after 1996 by Ford's 4.2-liter V6. In every measurable way except horsepower, that was a downgrade.

31 years. 4 million engines. Trucks, vans, Broncos, dump trucks, generators, UPS vans, tractors. The Ford 300 inline-six. The engine that was too simple to be impressive and too well-built to die.

The Ford B-Series Carryall was an F-Series based SUV built in Mexico. Only a few Ford B-100, B-150, and B-250 trucks have been imported into the USA.

This engine is nearly a hundred years old. We enjoyed getting it running after sitting for many years. I appreciate our customers and the trust they put in us.

If your radiator and condenser are obstructed by dirt and debris, your engine and a/c will not cool properly. If airflow is restricted your engine will run hotter and your a/c is less efficient. Proper cleaning will help with the life of your vehicle.
