Have you read “Shop Class As Soulcraft” by my friend Matt Crawford? It has a Slash Two on the cover. In his now famous book Matt discusses the value of craftsmanship in today’s society, waxes philosophical as a motorcycle mechanic and describes working on his illustrious CB360 cafe racer. Matt has asked me to find a new custodian for this machine, which is still in fine condition, and stored in our workshop. In his writings, particularly in Shop Class as Soulcraft, Matthew Crawford uses the 1975 Honda CB360 as a foundational example of his transformation as an academic into a hands on craftsman.
Regarding this specific motorcycle:
• The Basement Project: He describes this CB360 as the motorcycle he completely tore down and rebuilt in the basement of his apartment during his time living in Chicago.
• Transformation into a Café Racer: Crawford details how he modified the bike from its stock form into a café racer, a process that involved both aesthetic and functional alterations.
• The “Cognitive Richness” of Repair: He cites this specific project as his first profound encounter with the intellectual challenges of manual labor. He explains how the bike taught him that repair is not just a physical act but a diagnostic and problem-solving process.
• Internal Mechanical Struggles: In his descriptions, he often reflects on the specific mechanical eccentricities of mid-70s Japanese twins, such as the CB360, contrasting their “honest” and visible engineering with the more opaque designs of later decades.
• The Gateway Bike: The CB360 is framed as the machine that transitioned him from a purely academic life into a “manual” one, ultimately leading to the opening of his professional motorcycle repair shop, Shockoe Moto.
• First Deep Dive: He credits the rebuild of this 360cc twin as the moment he moved past simple maintenance into a comprehensive understanding of how complex mechanical systems harmonize. More important than asking price, my primary goal is to find a loving home for this bike. A variety of handmade aluminum body parts fabricated by Matt accompany the bike, and shop manuals. Message me for more information.
