Let’s talk about death wobble and steering stabilizers.
In this video, you can clearly see that the steering stabilizer shock has failed. The customer’s concern was a violent steering shake that would force them to slow down significantly before it would stop. A blown steering stabilizer can no longer properly absorb and control side-to-side steering movement, which can allow existing suspension and steering issues to become much more noticeable.
However, there is a common misconception that replacing the steering stabilizer fixes death wobble. In reality, it does not. A new stabilizer may temporarily reduce or mask the symptoms, but it does not correct the root cause of the problem.
Death wobble is almost always caused by worn, loose, or improperly adjusted steering and suspension components. During our inspection, tie rod ends, drag link ends, ball joints, track bars, control arms, wheel bearings, and alignment angles all need to be thoroughly evaluated. In this particular test, the tie rod and drag link joints should have absolutely no vertical movement during compression. Even the slightest amount of play can contribute to steering instability.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is parts being replaced without a proper diagnosis. Countless customers come to us after spending money on components that never addressed the actual cause of their death wobble. Accurate diagnosis is the key to a permanent repair.
