Tomorrow morning, Wisconsin DMV will publicly announce the end of the Road Test Waiver Pilot, which has been in place since May of 2020.

As of January 1, 2024, drivers under the age of 18 will need to complete an in-person road test to obtain their Probationary license. Appointments for a road test can be scheduled 11 weeks in advance at wisconsindmv.gov/roadtest. Student drivers ages 16 and 17 who have completed their required driver education course, behind the wheel training, and 50 hours of supervised driving may still apply for the road test waiver through December 31, 2023.

We anticipate questions about road test availability and can share that we’ll be offering tests consistent with the availability pre-COVID. Additionally, we anticipate questions from students and families about “exceptions” or allowing individuals to have their test waived after the pilot ends. We can state confidently that tests will be required starting January 1st, no exceptions.

There will be additional information in tomorrow’s press releases, but if you have questions please email them to us and we’ll do our best to get you answers as quickly as possible.

Thank you,

Wisconsin DMV Training & Records Unit

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and October 15 is recognized nationally as White Cane Safety Day every year.

The White Cane Law promotes the year-round independence of people in the blind and visually impaired community, creating a sense of empowerment and improving public safety. Thousands of blind and visually impaired individuals around Wisconsin use a white cane for mobility and safe travel.

The Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired is asking driver education instructors across the state to use their communications channels to raise awareness of the law that protects the rights of pedestrians who are blind or visually impaired.

Wisconsin’s White Cane Law, Statute N. 346.26(1) states:

“An operator of a vehicle shall stop the vehicle before approaching closer than 10 feet to a pedestrian who is carrying a cane or walking stick which is white in color or white trimmed with red and which is held in an extended or raised position or who is using a dog guide and shall take such precautions as may be necessary to avoid accident or injury to the pedestrian.”

Help us create welcoming communities for all residents and reduce the number of accidents involving those who are blind or visually impaired. Highlight the White Cane Law in your upcoming lessons to safeguard pedestrians. Let the Council know if you are interested in curriculum ideas for teaching students the White Cane Law. A media toolkit is available for download at WCBlind.org/events/white-cane-safety-day/.

We invite you join us in building communities that are safer and more welcoming for all residents. Thank you in advance for promoting pedestrian safety in your community and helping raise awareness of Wisconsin’s White Cane Law.

Sincerely,

Denise Jess (she/her/hers) – Why Pronouns?
