DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE – MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE
The old spiritual “Down by the Riverside” gives us a picture of someone ready to lay down a heavy burden. We all carry burdens—sin, grief, fear, anger, regret, and troubles we don’t know how to fix. The good news is that we don’t have to carry them alone.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He doesn’t promise that every problem will disappear the moment we pray. He promises to meet us, give us rest for our souls, and help us keep walking with Him.
The song also says, “I ain’t gonna study war no more.” That points us to Isaiah 2:4: “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” God’s promised peace reaches beyond the battles between nations. He can also quiet the battles in our hearts and teach us to lay down bitterness, hatred, and the desire to get even.
So when we sing about laying down our burdens, let’s remember where we can bring them: to the Lord. We may still face hard roads, but we don’t have to face them without Jesus. Bring Him what weighs you down, trust Him with what you cannot change, and let His peace guide your next step.
