Why Your VIN Matters

Two trucks can look nearly identical and still be built differently.

Single alternator or dual alternator. Different turbo configurations. Different fuel tanks: different trim levels, options, wiring, and components.

That’s why having the correct VIN matters when your truck comes into the shop.

The VIN allows our technicians to pull vehicle-specific build and service information so we know how that particular truck was configured. That information becomes important throughout the diagnostic and repair process, from identifying wiring connections to making sure we're ordering the correct parts.

Without the right vehicle information, something as simple as ordering the wrong component can slow down an entire repair.

Every truck is different. Proper diagnostics start with knowing exactly what we're working on.

More Information. Better Diagnostics.

A technician shouldn’t have to start completely blind.

“I hear a click when I turn the wheel” gives us somewhere to start. But knowing exactly when it happens, what the truck is doing, and what other symptoms show up can put our technicians on the right diagnostic path much faster.

That’s the purpose of our vehicle intake form.

It’s specifically for customers dealing with an issue that needs to be figured out, whether Southern Diesel Supply is the first shop looking at it or the truck has already been through multiple shops without an answer.

The more information we have about the symptoms, the less time we spend chasing unrelated issues and the more focused the diagnostic process becomes.

More information doesn’t replace proper diagnostics. It helps us start in the right direction.

Have a diesel issue nobody has been able to figure out? Send us a message.

Better Information = Better Diagnostics

“Lack of power” tells us there’s a problem. It doesn’t always tell us when or why it’s happening.

That’s why we’ve started using a vehicle intake form to get more detailed information from customers before we get deep into diagnostics.

When does the issue happen?
Only while towing? Under acceleration?
Is there black or blue smoke?
Is there a noise from the engine bay or underneath the truck?

Those details matter.

The more accurately we understand the symptoms and the conditions that cause them, the more focused our diagnostic process can be. That means less time chasing the wrong problem and a clearer path toward finding the actual issue.

Better information helps our technicians diagnose more efficiently and helps get the truck back to the customer sooner.

This is why proper diagnostics starts before we ever turn a wrench.

If you own a 2020+ Duramax, not every upgrade needs to be about chasing bigger horsepower numbers.

Some of the most worthwhile modifications improve reliability, airflow, cooling, and make future maintenance much easier.

In this video, Ben shares five bolt-on upgrades he recommends, including:

Calibrated Power Stealth 64 Drop-In Turbo
WC Fab Aluminum Intercooler Piping
Banks Oil Pan
FASS Aluminum Fuel Filter Cap

These upgrades solve common weak points while improving overall drivability and long-term performance.

At Southern Diesel Supply, we focus on upgrades that work because they're backed by real shop experience and proven results.

Which one would be your first upgrade? Let us know in the comments.

FILLING UP DURING A DELIVERY?

One question we hear from diesel owners is whether it's a bad idea to fuel up while a tanker truck is filling the station's underground fuel tanks.

The concern is understandable.

When fuel is delivered, sediment that has settled inside the storage tank can potentially become disturbed.

Fortunately, modern diesel fuel systems rely on advanced filtration designed to remove contaminants before they reach critical fuel system components.

That's why fuel filter maintenance is so important.

High-quality fuel filters combined with regular replacement intervals can help protect your injectors, pumps, and fuel system from contaminants and water intrusion.

The best defense against fuel contamination isn't worrying about every fuel stop.

It's staying ahead on maintenance.

How often are you changing your fuel filters?

FIRST 2 MODS I'D DO TODAY

If you handed us a completely stock 5th Gen Cummins and asked for the first upgrades we'd recommend, we'd start with reliability.

First would be a lift pump.

A quality lift pump improves fuel filtration, water separation, and helps remove air from the fuel before it reaches critical fuel system components.

Next would be a thermal bypass upgrade.

The factory thermal bypass is designed to help transmission fluid warm up faster, but if it sticks, fluid may not properly circulate through the transmission cooler. Excess heat is one of the leading causes of transmission problems.

For a relatively inexpensive upgrade, it can help protect a very expensive component.

Before adding power, make sure the truck is built to stay reliable.

What's the first upgrade you made to your diesel truck?

BAD FUEL CAN COST YOU THOUSANDS

Water contamination is one of the biggest threats to a diesel fuel system.

When moisture enters the fuel, it can create conditions for algae growth and other contaminants to develop inside the tank.

If fuel filters aren't changed regularly, those contaminants can eventually reach the pump and injectors, leading to reduced performance and costly repairs.

Fuel filter maintenance may seem simple, but it's one of the best investments you can make in the longevity of your diesel truck.

A small maintenance item today can prevent a major fuel system repair tomorrow.
