Princess Diana loved driving herself. But when she wanted one of Ford’s hottest hatchbacks, royal security presented an unusual problem.

Diana had previously driven a Ford Es**rt 1.6i Cabriolet, but its open roof reportedly left her too exposed for the protection officers traveling with her.

She still wanted another Es**rt — only this time, she wanted the much faster RS Turbo.

Ford’s Special Vehicle Engineering team came up with a solution specifically for her.

They built Diana a one-off Es**rt RS Turbo Series 1 finished in black, rather than the white normally associated with the model. A conventional five-slat grille was fitted to make the performance car less conspicuous, while a second rear-view mirror allowed her protection officer to watch traffic behind them.

A radio was also installed in the glovebox for communication with the security team.

Diana drove the Es**rt from August 1985 until May 1988, covering roughly 6,800 miles before it returned to Ford.

Decades later, the unusual royal hot hatch became enormously collectible.

In 2022, it sold at auction for £650,000 before fees — an extraordinary ending for a Ford originally modified simply so a princess could enjoy driving herself.
