Today I had a potential customer call to discuss detailing several of his vehicles. During our conversation, he mentioned that he was specifically looking for a detailer who focuses primarily on high-end and exotic vehicles.

As we continued talking, it became clear that another detailer in town would be a better fit for what he was looking for. Rather than trying to force a sale, I provided him with that company’s contact information and wished him the best.

Not every customer is the right fit for every business—and that’s okay.

There is nothing wrong with referring a customer to another company when you genuinely believe they can better meet that customer’s needs. In fact, putting the customer’s interests first builds trust, credibility, and long-term relationships.

A little humility goes a long way. No business is the perfect fit for everyone. That’s why there are Fords, Dodges, Chevrolets, Toyotas, and every other brand on the road. Different customers have different needs, preferences, and expectations.

For perspective, the truck in this picture had an MSRP of over $100,000, and the vehicles the customer and I discussed ranged from $60,000 to $80,000. While we regularly work on beautiful vehicles of all types, I believed another specialist would better align with what this customer was seeking.

Business isn’t always about closing every sale. Sometimes it’s about doing what’s right for the customer.

Those referrals have a way of coming back around.
