BACK TO SCHOOL
With students back in the classroom, Monroe Public Safety is reminding everyone to use a little extra caution around schools, buses, crosswalks and neighborhoods.
Whether you're behind the wheel, walking to school or waiting for the bus, a few simple reminders can help everyone start the school year safely.
School Buses: Know the Law
In Michigan, almost all drivers are expected to stop for school buses, regardless of what side of the road they are traveling.
Two lane traffic? Everyone stops. Multi-lane traffic with a turn lane? Everyone stops.
The only exception is when there is a median (paved or unpaved) or barrier between lanes of traffic. In those instances, oncoming traffic should yield/slow down, while traffic behind the bus MUST stop.
Know the School Bus Signals
Flashing yellow lights mean SLOW DOWN.
The bus is preparing to stop to pick up or drop off students. Drivers should slow down and be ready to stop.
Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm mean STOP.
Children may be getting on or off the bus and crossing the street. Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn and the bus begins moving again.
Never try to quickly pass a bus before its lights change.
A few extra seconds can make a big difference.
Drivers: Slow Down & Stay Alert
School mornings and afternoons mean more buses, young pedestrians and bicyclists on the road.
Slow down near schools, bus stops and residential areas.
Watch carefully at crosswalks and intersections.
Give yourself extra time during morning and afternoon school traffic.
Put the phone down and keep your attention on the road.
Be especially careful around parked vehicles, where children may be difficult to see.
Never block a crosswalk when stopping at an intersection.
