Classic Cruisers of Monroe We are the Classic Cruisers of Monroe. A community "informal car club", no rules, no hassles, no money Today, the club entertains a crowd each month.

Back in 1986, two gentlemen standing in front of the Sonic came up with an idea to form a car club. Forest Clayton and Dan Pierce gave birth to a new club and gave it the name of “Classic Cruisers of Monroe” Now I’m sure there is much history missing and we’ll eventually attempt to fill in all the missing holes. For now, the biggest little car club in the "Carolinas” meets right here in Sweet Union County every 3rd Sunday of the Month at the Poplin Place Shopping Center (Target, Hwy 74). Originally formed back in 1986 with a small following of classic car enthusiasts. Classic cars, trucks, street rods, and muscle cars line the parking lot of the Poplin Place - Target Shopping Center located on East Hwy 74 every 3rd Sunday of the Month (1pm to 4pm). We probably have between 20 and 40 active members, but did you know we have over 450+ total members on our membership list. Before moving to our latest gathering spot, we met at CiCi’s Pizza, Buffalo’s Café, Indian Trail’s Burger King, and the Amarillo Depot in Monroe. Although most cars featured are classics from a bygone era, the invitation to the Club is open to everything from the mid-teens to the present. There are trucks as well as cars, from the 20s to the present, no telling what might show up. There’s always a gathering of gawkers around the modified street rods, and not always the folks you’d expect. According to Jim Collura, previous club Prez, “You usually think of the younger guys with the street rods and muscle cars; it’s fun to see the 40– and 60– year-olds pull up with their gray hair and beards.”

Some of the Cruisers take their cars to shows throughout the country but most stay within the South-Eastern area and go to shows like Run to the Sun at Myrtle Beach, Good Guys Rod and Custom Show now held in Raleigh (vs. Charlotte Motor Speedway, and of course the AutoFair at the Speedway as well. The club has helped with local charities, including Hospice and the Christmas Bureau. In October of 1995:

The Club welcomes Newcomers. “We’re open to anybody with an interest in cars and a love to talk about them,” say Jim Collura.

We've lost a great fellow hot rodder this past weekend with the passing of "Smokey". Also known as Smokey Bear: facebook.com/smokybear03

Our thoughts and prayers are with Michelle, family and friends that will miss this dear soul. But knowing he is is at peace with his maker brings some relief.

Lord, as we gather with heavy hearts and empty passenger seats, comfort the family, friends, and this fellow gearhead left behind. Give us peace in the quiet garage, strength to carry the miles ahead, and the deep hope that You have prepared a smooth, endless highway for him—where the engines never stall, the tires never wear, and the sun always shines on a wide-open track.

Chuck Grant says it best:

I’m truly heart broken. My good friend went home to be with the Lord Saturday. We were suppose to do a show together at Dairy-O Saturday but the Lord had other plans. He called my buddy home. He will be truly missed. Please remember his family in your prayers. They truly need them to get through this unbelievable tough time. Smokey was truly one of a kind that never met a stranger. I don’t believe I ever meet someone as kind and would go out of his way to help strangers. I learned so much in a short time from my buddy. We will be honoring him in the classic/hot rod community of ours that Smokey cherished and loved. May he rest in peace until we meet again. I will be announcing plans shortly to honoring him and hope all of Classic Cruisers of Monroe members and beyond to participate in this event. PLEASE Remember his family in your prayers! / WAGER

Pending family wishes we hope to provide a tribute to Smokey in the near future.

Dairy-O Cruise-In, Oct2026: What a great turnout and a great day. The Cruise-In was a big hit with 100+ cars/trucks turning out. DJ Chuck-A-Licious rocked the crowd and the Dairy-O staff was spot on serving up some delicious food, ice cream and many special creameries to all that came out. A great big shout out to Seth and his entire staff for hosting this first event. If you missed it....no worries as we'll be doing this or bigger in 2027. Thanks to all that came out....it was our pleasure getting this one together for all to enjoy.
