Brigid is Bernie’s wife of 28 years and still the love of his life. Together, they own a small local bike shop that has always been their dream, even though it does not make much money. Recently, Bernie brought home a little mini bike to putt around on, and Brigid mentioned that she would like to learn to ride again since she had ridden a small dirt bike in her youth. What should have been a simple moment turned into a nightmare. On her first ride, she started the bike, hit the gas, became overwhelmed, and accelerated until she fell. Bernie watched in horror, unable to stop what was happening right in front of his eyes. He rushed Brigid to the local hospital, and from there she was transferred to a special pain management hospital an hour and a half away because of how severe her injuries are.
Brigid suffered 7 broken ribs, including breaks in the front and back, a broken bone in her spine, a broken left ankle, 2 large bumps on her head, and multiple painful areas of road rash. Most of the injuries arent too bad, but the broken ribs (some broken front and back), and the broken bone in her spine mean she is now facing a long, painful and difficult recovery, and the emotional toll on both of them has been overwhelming. As Bernie tries to stay by Brigid’s side and help her heal, they are also carrying the stress of medical bills, recovery costs, and lost income while she is unable to work. This comes only months after Bernie went through quadruple heart bypass surgery in March and then developed sepsis and had to be life-flighted, so they have already been through more than their share of medical hardship.
