Oil finishes bring out a warm, natural look and are easy to touch up, but they need re-oiling more often. Spar varnish holds up to sun and weather and gives a deeper shine.

Whatever you use, look for UV protection if she'll spend time outside at shows.

Apply thin coats, let each one fully cure, and lightly scuff between coats for the best result.

Surface rust brushes off and leaves solid metal underneath. Rot is different โ€” poke it with a screwdriver and it flakes, crumbles, or goes straight through. Check the bed sides, the front bed panel, and especially where the cross sills meet the wood, because moisture loves to sit right there.

Knowing the difference up front saves you from buying parts twice.
