We are very exited to announce we have added the equipment for newer 1234yf auto A/C systems! No more needing to go to another place!
Why does this matter? The oldest refrigerant in autos from 70s to early 90s was R-12, an ozone depleting AND greenhouse gas. Most vehicles from mid-90s until late 2010s use the R-134a gas, not ozone depleting but still greenhouse gas. Vehicles starting late teens began to have the new gas 1234yf. Not ozone depleting and almost no greenhouse effect, but required separate equipment from 134a.
If you need recharge service or diagnosis of your A/C system, give us a call at 406-830-6353 or come in today!

Repairs de-mystified: SUSPENSION.

Our next subject is one that matters a lot going into winter, and has a lot of parts and design variants which can make understanding these repairs difficult.
First off, the obvious question: why should I care? Suspension affects tire contact with the road. Better alignment, better traction, safer driving.

How does it work? This takes a bit to answer, mainly because there are multiple designs. Essentially, control arms act like a human elbow while the famous (or infamous) ball joints work like a wrist. Struts/shocks act like the muscles controlling the rate and level of movement.
The picture included shows the 3 main types: MacPherson, double wishbone, and multi-link. MacPherson is often on smaller vehicles, and the strut acts like upper control arm. Big vehicles, like large SUV and trucks often have the double wishbone since it takes heavier loads better. Multi-link is most often on sports vehicles or luxury vehicles where performance and comfort are emphasized over ease of maintenance.
A strut is often called a shock, but they are not actually the same. A strut is the assembly including the shock, the coils, shock mounts. In the MacPherson setup, a strut is the upper control arm. In large vehicles, the strut works in tandem with the upper control arm.
And then the famous ball joints. These connect the control arms to the wheel knuckle, which is what the wheel and brake parts all mount to. A ball joint is a great solution to the multiple travel directions required, but it also makes it a weak point to fail.
Alignment goes with replacement of these parts because of how all these parts interact. If the ball joint fails, the knuckle is wiggling and tire wear is not even. If the control arm or strut bushings (bits of rubber mounting these parts to the frame) fail, same thing since as they wiggle tire wear is not even. Alignment is required with new parts to ensure the tires are perpendicular to the road for proper wear and braking/steering control. A couple degrees make a big difference. Alignment ensures tires wear and grip even. You don't want to have to buy new tires before you have to after all!

Repairs De-mystified: COOLANT SYSTEMS!

We work to be transparent and helpful at Peak Auto Repair, so to that end we are going to do a series of posts to give you better information about repairs we recommend.

Now you may be wondering: "why do I need to worry about my coolant going into winter? The cold air will do the cooling work for my engine." Short answer: Vehicle engines aren't designed to work that way. And if your coolant system has an issue you will be FREEZING in your cabin, don't ignore this sign! Why is this?
1) Vehicle coolant flows from the engine to the heater core and uses the heat from the engine to heat the heater core, which is next to your cabin fan. This is why it takes so long for your cabin heat to get hot unless you have a newer vehicle with quick-heat systems. This is also why your cabin can go cold after driving, coolant is missing and not taking heat to your cabin.
2) Vehicles about 2010 and newer are designed with tight temperature tolerances. You don't want to be leaking coolant! The infamous Head Gasket could be ruined with even a slight overheat from low coolant.
3) Vehicles are designed with specific coolant in mind now. The days of general green coolant are mostly gone (if you have an older vehicle from early 2000s or 90s the green may still be ok). Vehicles usually have distinct markings or labels to say what they require, or a mechanic or parts store has that on record.
3a) Coolant is usually by color and maker. The main lay of the land: Ford, Chrysler (Jeep, Dodge, Ram too) - Orange. Toyota, Lexus - Red. Honda, Nissan, Subaru - Blue. GMC, Chevy - Dex-cool Orange (a special type, not the Ford orange). Nissan also uses a bright green coolant that is NOT conventional green, makes it tricky to know which is right.
Generally, safest to match the color in the vehicle even if not OE coolant. Why? See the next point.
4) The worst thing to do is mix coolant colors. Mixing them can cause the fluid to gel and clog or, at worst, rust your coolant system from the inside out! If in doubt, match the color in your vehicle and have a trusted mechanic verify the type once able and perhaps do a flush.

Keep an eye out for future posts!
