Most people think an A/C repair is as simple as adding refrigerant. In reality, doing it correctly is all about protecting the system and verifying every step.
This ambulance came in with warm A/C. Instead of introducing additional moisture into the system, I performed a controlled nitrogen leak test to safely locate the leak without contaminating the refrigerant circuit. The culprit turned out to be a 30-cent O-ring on the low-side service port. It’s a simple fix, but without the proper testing techniques and equipment, it’s easy to misdiagnose the problem and end up replacing expensive components that were never faulty.
After confirming the leak, I replaced the receiver dryer to eliminate any moisture contamination, pulled a deep vacuum to boil off any remaining moisture, and recharged the system to specification.
Once charged, I used my infrared camera to verify the temperature change across the expansion valve, watching the latent heat of vaporization occur in real time and confirming the system was operating efficiently. The final test was the one that mattered most: more than a 45-degree temperature drop at the vents, delivering cold air back to the crew.
The right tools, the right process, and an understanding of the science behind the system make all the difference. There’s a big difference between getting an A/C system cold and repairing it the right way.
