Honda, Killer Keys!
Honda, which is known to be one of the most reliable car manufacturers, has one of the most unreliable locks. Their failure is triggered when somebody inserts a worn down thin key. After about ten years of use or less, the keys wear down and destroy the locks. In the locksmithing industry they are known as killer keys. This is easily avoided, by contacting a locksmith and having them reshell your key every time you notice any wear or damage to the tip of the key. If unaddressed killer keys create a snowball effect of problems that become more and more expensive. Reshelling a key is around $80. If the key is allowed to kill the door lock and ignition, it can cost over $800, and many hours of your time while you are possibly stranded.
If you ever notice that your Honda key is difficult to insert into a lock, whatever you do, do not push the key into the lock, or pull it out with any force. If you do have these issues, and cannot immediately go to a locksmith, jiggle your key very gently, and contact a locksmith. Once the keys start cleaving the wafers the lock could fail at any moment. For door locks, this is sometimes not the biggest issue if you have a remote, but even if it is just the door lock, the killer key will destroy the ignition next. Even if you have a remote, it may seem like not a big deal, but most Hondas only have one exterior lock, as soon as the battery gets low, you will no longer be able to get into your vehicle, and you would be left stranded. Usually the door lock fails first, then the ignition a few months later. If the ignition dies, it can die in the on or half-on position, stranding a vehicle with the key possibly even stuck in the ignition.
