Today's vehicles have more computers, sensors and technology than ever before. That technology can make vehicles safer, more efficient and easier to diagnose, but it doesn't eliminate the need for good old-fashioned maintenance.

Oil, coolant, brakes, belts, hoses, batteries, suspension components and exhaust systems still wear out. Regular inspections and maintenance remain one of the best ways to catch problems early.

The vehicles may be getting smarter, but they still need someone to take care of them.

Brakes aren't something you want to think about only when there's a problem. If you've noticed squealing, grinding, vibration while braking, a soft or unsual pedal or your vehicle pulling when you stop, those are all good reasons to have the braking system inspected.

Even if everything seems normal, regular brake inspections are an important part of keeping your vehicle safe.

Labor Day weekend is one of those last chances to squeeze a little more out of summer.

If you're heading out of town this weekend, take a few minutes before you leave to check your oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid and tire pressure, and make sure all of your lights are working.

And, of course, give yourself plenty of time to get where you're going.

That little check engine light can be easy to ignore when the vehicles still seems to be running normally. But the light is there for a reason.

Sometimes it's something relatively simple. Other times it's an early warning that a problem could become much more expensive if it's ignored.

If your check engine light has come on, don't automatically assume the worst. Proper diagnosis is the first step toward knowing what actually needs to be repaired.

September is a good reminder that Oregon driving conditions are about to start changing.

The mornings get cooler, daylight gets shorter and before we know it, we'll be dealing with considerably more rain on the roads. Now is a good time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the change in seasons. Check your wipers, lights, brakes, fluids and battery, and don't ignore anything that has started making a new noise or behaving differently.

Taking care of those little things now can make fall driving a lot less stressful.

It's hard to believe we're already heading into the last few days of August.

With school starting back up and summer winding down, we're curious: What's one place around Oregon City or Clackamas County that you always recommend to someone visiting the area? A favorite restaurant, park, back road, coffee shop, viewpoint or little local spot all count.

Let's give some love to the businesses and places that make our area a great place to live.

We may not get Arizona-style heat here in Oregon, but those warmer summer days still put plenty of work on your vehicle's cooling system.

Coolant level, radiator condition, hoses, thermostat and cooling fans all play a part in keeping your engine at the right temperature.

If you've noticed the temperature gauge running higher than usual, coolant under the vehicle, a sweet smell after driving or your cooling fan running more than normal, it's worth having it checked out. Don't wait for an overheating problem to turn into an engine repair.

Summer has a way of putting some extra miles on our vehicles. Between road trips, commuting, vacations and running aroudn with the kdis, August can be a busy month behind the wheel.

Before we get too far into fall, it's a good time to have the basics checked out: fluids, belts and hoses, brakes, battery, cooling system, and overall vehicle condition.

A little preventative maintenance now can help keep a small problem from becoming a much bigger repair later.
