--- Circuit History and Inside the Circuit ---
We asked circuit finals announcer, Bob Edmonds, to give a little insider info on some storylines discovered while he prepares for the finals:
“While the PRCA Circuit system started in 1975 and we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary this year, the first Mountain States Circuit Champion Team Roper wasn’t crowned until 1976 and it wasn’t really until the early 2000’s that we had a Header and Heeler champion. Prior to that, if a team roped together all year, we had co-champion Team Ropers. The first Mountain States Champion in 1976 was Dick Yates. He was a co-champion five more times with his son J.D., and J.D. went on to win the team roping one additional time along with a record tying 7 All Around Titles and 5 Steer Roping Titles in his Hall of Fame Career. Its only fitting that in 2025, Dick’s grandson, Trey is going to win the Heeling Championship for his second time and is on his way to his 4th Wrangler NFR.
There are a few new pairings for the circuit finals compared to the regular season that makes it a little tough to keep straight, but its safe to say Clayton Van Aken will win his 6th Team Roping title in the Mountain States with a whopper of nearly $39,000 coming into the finals. In the 3 round format, team roping can be hit or miss as everyone wants the money in the go-rounds, but its the team that takes care of business and stays clean on all 3 that comes out on top in the average and gets the invite to Colorado Springs for the NFR Open.”
