We've had multiple reports of a scam and although the scam website has been taken down, we wanted to share it with you.
Someone sees a nice classic car listed online priced way below market value. The website selling the cars was made to look like Best Way Auto Sales here locally so it appears legit however the website address is one letter off from the actual car lot name - bestwaysauto.com. The out of state purchaser then buys the nice vintage muscle car online, sight unseen and they are getting pressure from the seller. When the purchaser comes to pickup the car they realize that the car lot isn’t in business and there are no cars for sale at all. We've even had people send transport trailers only to show up to find an empty lot.
Rule of thumb, if it’s too good to be true then it probably is. Do your research and research the seller. If the seller is representing themselves as a dealer, confirm the dealer exists and that you are actually communicating with the dealer. Some other things to try:
-Google the phone number in the ad.
-Google the address and look at the location on Google Maps
-Check to see when they did their last social media post
-Check the date on the most recent review
-Do you see similar vehicles to the one you’re purchasing in photos for the car lot?
-If there is no phone number or no one answers the phone and they only want to communicate over email – Beware! Legitimate dealerships want to talk with you.
The best solution is to go see the vehicle in person and make sure it exists before making the purchase.
