I’m sorry but this receipt just confirmed what I’ve been saying for years. Tipping on a to go order makes absolutely no sense and the fact that it’s even expected now is getting completely out of control. I walked in, grabbed my food, and walked out. Nobody refilled my drink, nobody checked on my table, nobody brought extra napkins, nobody cleaned anything up after me, nobody provided any kind of service that tipping was originally meant for. Yet the screen still flips around asking for 18%, 22%, 25% like I just sat down for a full service dining experience. And before anyone says the kitchen worked hard, the kitchen is already being paid by the restaurant. That is literally what the menu price is for. If I’m paying fifteen dollars for fried chicken and seven dollars for a frozen margarita to go, that price should already include the cost of cooking it and putting it in a container. That is not a tip situation, that is just doing the job you are already getting paid to do. Tipping used to be for service, now it feels like a mandatory donation just for existing. Pick up your own food, tip. Self checkout, tip. Grab a drink from a counter, tip. At this point they might as well put a tip screen on the gas pump too. I’m not trying to be cheap, I tip when I sit down and get actual service, but I am not tipping for walking in, grabbing a bag, and leaving. If that makes me the bad guy then so be it.
