What Arizona Drivers Should Know Before Filing a Windshield Insurance Claim

A cracked windshield can happen in seconds.

A rock gets kicked up on the freeway, you hear the familiar pop, and suddenly there’s a chip or crack directly in your line of sight.

For Arizona drivers, windshield damage is particularly common. Between highway driving, construction, loose gravel and extreme temperature swings, auto glass takes a beating.

After more than 35 years working in the auto glass industry, one thing I’ve learned is that many drivers understand far less about the insurance side of windshield replacement than they do about the glass itself.

Here are several things worth knowing before filing a windshield claim.

Your Insurance Company Doesn’t Necessarily Choose Your Glass Shop

One of the biggest misconceptions is that when you call your insurance company about windshield damage, you must use whichever auto glass company is suggested during the claim process.

In most situations, customers have a choice of repair facility.

Insurance companies may have preferred providers or networks designed to simplify claims processing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask questions about who will actually perform the work.

Before scheduling a replacement, consider asking:

* What brand and type of windshield will be installed?
* Does my vehicle require ADAS calibration?
* Who performs that calibration?
* Is the calibration performed in-house or sent somewhere else?
* What adhesive system will be used?
* What warranty comes with the installation?

Those questions have become increasingly important as windshields have become more technologically advanced.

Arizona Has a Unique Glass-Coverage Option

Arizona is one of the states where insurers may offer comprehensive coverage without a deductible for glass damage.

That doesn’t mean every Arizona policy automatically includes free windshield replacement.

Your coverage depends on the policy you’ve purchased.

Some drivers have full glass coverage with no deductible. Others have comprehensive coverage with a deductible that applies to glass claims.

Before authorizing a replacement, it’s worth confirming exactly what your policy provides.

A Windshield Is No Longer Just a Piece of Glass

This is probably the biggest change I’ve seen during my career.

On many modern vehicles, cameras and sensors are mounted to or positioned behind the windshield.

Those systems may support features including:

* Forward collision warning
* Automatic emergency braking
* Lane departure warning
* Lane keeping assistance
* Adaptive cruise control
* Traffic-sign recognition

Replacing the windshield can change the position of a forward-facing camera by a very small amount.

That small difference matters.

When required by the vehicle manufacturer, the camera needs to be recalibrated following the proper procedures after windshield replacement.

This is known as ADAS calibration.

Ask Who Is Actually Performing the Calibration

If your vehicle requires calibration, don’t be afraid to ask where and how it will be performed.

Some auto glass companies perform ADAS calibration themselves. Others subcontract that portion of the job to another business or send the vehicle elsewhere.

Neither fact alone tells you whether the work will be done correctly, but customers should know who is responsible for an important part of their vehicle’s safety system.

At Premiere Auto Glass, we invested in performing ADAS calibration in-house because modern windshield replacement increasingly involves both auto glass and vehicle technology.

OEM, OEM-Equivalent and Aftermarket Glass

Another common question is whether insurance will pay for an OEM windshield.

There’s no universal answer.

Coverage can depend on your insurance policy, vehicle, availability, insurer requirements and other factors.

It’s also important to understand that the word aftermarket covers a wide range of products.

There are high-quality replacement windshields manufactured by major global automotive-glass manufacturers, and there are differences among glass products.

Rather than focusing solely on the logo printed on the windshield, drivers should consider the complete installation:

Correct glass + correct adhesive + proper installation + required calibration.

All four matter.

Don’t Ignore a Repairable Chip

Not every damaged windshield needs replacement.

Depending on the size, type and location of the damage, a rock chip may be repairable.

Repairing appropriate damage early can sometimes prevent a small chip from spreading into a crack that requires replacing the entire windshield.

This is especially worth considering in Arizona because heat and temperature changes can put additional stress around already damaged areas of glass.

If you hear a rock strike the windshield, inspect the area when it’s safe to do so.

Catching damage early can save considerable trouble later.

Don’t Choose a Windshield Company Based Only on an Incentive

Arizona’s auto glass market is unusually competitive, and consumers sometimes encounter companies offering incentives with qualifying insurance replacements.

An incentive shouldn’t replace your normal questions about workmanship and safety.

Before selecting any shop, look at its reputation, experience, warranty, glass products, calibration capabilities and installation procedures.

A windshield is part of your vehicle’s safety system.

The quality of the installation should always come first.

Experience Still Matters

The technology surrounding auto glass has changed dramatically since I entered this industry more than 35 years ago.

The fundamentals of good workmanship haven’t.

Correct preparation, quality materials, attention to detail and following vehicle-manufacturer procedures remain essential.

Premiere Auto Glass was established in 1999, and we’ve watched windshield replacement evolve alongside the vehicles themselves.

Today’s technicians need to understand much more than removing one piece of glass and installing another.

They need to understand the technology attached to it.

The Bottom Line

If you need to file a windshield insurance claim in Arizona, don’t feel pressured to make an immediate decision.

Understand your coverage.

Ask questions.

Choose a qualified auto glass company.

And if your vehicle has a camera behind the windshield, find out whether calibration is required and who will perform it.

The insurance claim may only take a few minutes.

The windshield installed in your vehicle could be there for years.

It’s worth making sure the job is done correctly.

Why Your Next Windshield Replacement Requires ADAS Calibration: A Complete Safety Guide for Arizona Drivers.

If you drive a vehicle built within the last decade, replacing a windshield is no longer just a matter of swapping out a piece of glass.
Modern cars rely on sophisticated driver-assistance networks to keep you safe on high-speed freeways like the Superstition Freeway (US 60), Loop 202, and I-10. Mounted directly behind your rear-view mirror sits the heart of these systems: forward-facing camera modules and optical sensors.
When your windshield is replaced, those sensitive optical units are physically removed and reinstalled. Even a miscalculation as tiny as one millimeter can cause your vehicle's safety features to misjudge distances at 65 mph.
Here is what every Arizona vehicle owner needs to know about Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) calibration, how it works, and why it's critical to your safety.
What is ADAS and How Does It Connect to Your Windshield?
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) encompass active electronic safety features designed to reduce driver error. These systems depend on cameras scanning the road through pristine safety glass.
Key vehicle safety features linked directly to your windshield include:
* Lane Keep Assist (LKA) & Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Tracks painted lane lines on the highway.
* Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): Measures real-time distances between your front bumper and preceding vehicles.
* Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Adjusts vehicle velocity based on dynamic traffic flows.
* Pedestrian & Wildlife Detection: Identifies road hazards in low-visibility or nighttime conditions.
When a cracked windshield is replaced, the camera bracket moves. Without precise optical recalibration, your car’s computer system operates on outdated positional data.
Static vs. Dynamic Calibration: What’s the Difference?
Depending on your vehicle’s make and model—from domestic trucks to luxury European vehicles like Porsche or BMW—recalibration requires specific technical procedures:
| Calibration Type | How It Works | Common Vehicle Makes
| Static Calibration | Performed in a controlled shop setting using specialized physical target boards, laser measuring tools, and diagnostic software. | Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz |
| Dynamic Calibration | Performed while driving the vehicle at specified speeds on marked roads under clear weather conditions to let sensors auto-map. | Ford, Chevy, Genesis, Hyundai |
| Dual Calibration | Combines both static shop targeting and active road testing for high-precision multi-camera arrays. | Select Luxury & EV Models (Tesla, Audi) |
Will Insurance Cover ADAS Calibration in Arizona?
Yes. Under Arizona Revised Statute § 20-264, if you carry comprehensive coverage with a zero-deductible safety glass rider, ADAS recalibration is treated as an integral part of the windshield replacement process.
Insurers cover 100% of the recalibration costs alongside the glass itself—leaving you with $0 out-of-pocket expenses.
Why Local Expertise Matters for Valley Drivers
Extreme Arizona temperatures can cause vehicle subframes to expand and contract, while rough desert roads test structural adhesives. Choosing a certified technician ensures:
* OEM-Quality Glass Usage: Inferior glass with slight optical distortions can disrupt camera clarity and trigger system error lights.
* Certified Diagnostic Equipment: Precise alignment back to factory specifications using specialized target systems.
* Comprehensive Claims Handling: Complete billing synchronization directly with major auto insurance carriers.
