Buying a Used Vehicle? Read This Before You Buy an Extended Warranty

I’ve spent a lot of time lately dealing with extended warranties and vehicle service contracts from the repair-shop side of the counter, and I think there are some things consumers simply aren’t told clearly enough before they sign.
I’m actually a believer in extended coverage—especially on a newer, low-mileage used vehicle where one electronic, transmission, turbo, module, or other major failure can quickly cost thousands of dollars.

But a good warranty and a bad warranty can look very similar when someone is sitting across from you selling it.
One of my biggest concerns is the growing use of dealer tie-back provisions, where the contract requires you to return to the selling dealership for covered repairs if you live within a certain distance—often 50 miles.

For me, that’s a major consideration.
I believe consumers should have the ability to choose the repair facility they trust. Competition creates accountability, and sometimes an independent shop will advocate much harder for a customer when a warranty company initially questions or denies part of a claim.
There are several other things worth understanding before you sign:

• Exclusionary vs. stated-component coverage
• Labor-rate and labor-time limitations
• OEM vs. aftermarket or used parts
• Diagnostic coverage
• Deductibles and waiting periods
• Whether “covered” actually means the entire repair bill is paid
• The real long-term cost of monthly aftermarket warranty plans

I put together these graphics as a quick consumer guide.
Save them. Share them with somebody shopping for a used car. And most importantly, ask to see the actual contract before you buy.
If a salesperson makes an important promise about coverage, my favorite question is:
“Can you show me where that is written in the contract?”
A warranty should protect your investment—not protect one dealership’s service lane.

⚠️ SOMETIMES, LUBRICATION IS NOT SAFE.

When it comes to wheel studs and lug nuts, more lubrication is not better.

Most manufacturer torque specifications are based on clean, dry, undamaged threads. Applying oil, grease, anti-seize, or another lubricant reduces friction and can dramatically change the clamping force created at the specified torque. This may result in overstretched studs, damaged threads, distorted brake components, or wheel-fastener failure.

At Universal Auto & Tire, we follow Tire Industry Association guidance and the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended service procedures. Unless the manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise, we do not lubricate wheel studs or lug nuts.

If a vehicle arrives with lubricant on the wheel fasteners, additional labor may be required to properly clean and inspect the studs, lug nuts, wheels, and mounting surfaces before the wheels can be safely installed and torqued. Any necessary cleaning, repairs, or replacement parts will be discussed with you and added to the repair order.
