Clocks fall back Sunday, November 1. Are your teen's after-sunset practice hours on track?
Virginia teens need 15 of their 45 supervised practice hours after sunset. In summer that means late-night drives. After November 1, it can be the drive home from practice.
We put together a simple plan: how to break 15 hours into short drives, a two-minute check before you pull out, and how to practice on our dark back roads.

We put together a simple new-resident checklist: license, title and registration, insurance, inspection, emissions, and the local items your city or county handles. DMV rules are checked against Virginia DMV.

It depends on why you're taking it. Voluntary, DMV-required, court-ordered and insurance-discount students are all treated differently, and some get no points at all.

We've updated our guide to Virginia's January 1, 2027 driver's ed change for 18-to-20-year-olds.

New: a quick "Does this apply to me?" check at the top, plus straight answers to the questions we keep hearing:
- Does high school driver's ed count?
- I got my permit in 2026. Am I covered by the old rules?
- Is age counted at the permit or at the license?
- Do I have to hold my permit while I take the classroom?

DMV hasn't fully answered two of those yet. The guide tells you which two, and what the safe plan is in the meantime.

Deer season is here. Do you know what to do if one steps out in front of you?

Up to two-thirds of Virginia deer/vehicle collisions happen in October, November and December, and the risk is highest from dusk to dawn (Virginia DWR). And on Sunday, November 1, the clocks fall back.

Court-ordered to take RADEP in Virginia?

There are two versions, 12 hours and 4 hours, and buying the wrong one can mean taking a second course.

Both of our RADEP courses are online. Courts decide individually whether they accept an online course, so check with your court clerk or attorney before you enroll. Not legal advice.
