Why detailing isn't cheap. (or at least it shouldn't be 🫣🫢).

Pictured here is just the tools being used to correct, polish, and protect one vehicle. Pads, three different polishers, a polisher attachment, a speed master light, touch-up paint, and ceramic coating. Total value: just under $1,400.

And that's before a single hour of labor gets factored in.

That number doesn't the wash and prep time it took to get the vehicle ready for correction/polishing. Nor does it include the paint thickness gauge we run on every panel before we ever pick up a polisher, so we know exactly how much clear coat we're working with and where the limits are. It doesn't include insurance. It doesn't include years of training, certifications, and ruined test panels it took to get good enough to trust these tools on somebody's paint in the first place.

Some people see a shop charge what feels like a lot for "just polishing a car" and assume it's markup. It's not. It's the cost of the equipment sitting on this bench, the coverage that protects your vehicle if something ever does go wrong, and the experience that keeps it from going wrong in the first place.

Cheap detailing exists because cheap tools and no insurance exist. Our business doesn't work that way.

Small business is brutal. Detailing is brutal.

Nobody warns you about that part. You think it's about the work. It's not. It's dead months. Equipment breaking at the worst possible time. Chasing money you already earned. Wondering some weeks if it's going to hold together at all.

I started this with $600 and a car. There were weeks where one share, one tag, one person telling somebody "go see this guy" was the difference between barely making it and actually making it. I don't forget that.

Having people who actually show up for each other makes this easier. Not easy. Easier.

So push those businesses. Buy something. Share a post. Tag them. None of that costs you a thing, and it takes less time than opening MonopolyGO.

Give small business the push it deserves. If you believe in your friend, believe in their business. It's their life. I promise you that.

Why do you have to see the car first?

Great question. Here's the answer..

Because we can't price what we haven't looked at. Two vehicles that are the same year and model can need completely different work. One has embedded contamination and oxidation. One has swirls that come out in a single stage. One has a repaint nobody mentioned. Photos don't show any of that, and neither does a phone call.

The alternative is quoting blind, and blind quotes go one of two ways. Either you get a number that goes up once the vehicle is on the lift, or you get a package that doesn't actually get you the result you were after. Both are bad. The second is worse, because you don't find out until it's done.

Seeing the vehicle also lets us tell you what it doesn't need. That conversation has saved clients real money more than once, and it's not one we can have over text.

There's also the part that matters more than any of it:.. you should meet the people who are going to have your vehicle for a couple of days before you leave it with them.

Booking sight unseen is faster. It just isn't more accurate, and accuracy is the entire point.

This truck came in for heavy leather work. The owner had paid for a detail a couple weeks earlier and wasn't happy with it.

Paige started on the leather. Another technician started on the parts nobody photographs. Popped the center console trim first.. dirt and grime packed in behind it. Then the seat rails.

None of that is visible when you hand the keys back. That's exactly why it gets skipped.

The console trim comes off. The seat rails get cleaned. The seams, the tracks, the edges under the panels. It adds time and nobody would have known the difference for another six months. That's the whole point.

A detail that only addresses what's visible isn't finished. It's staged.

There's a version of this business that runs on what's parked in the bay.

Post the exotic. Post the badge. Build an audience on the fact that expensive cars show up. It works, right up until you look at the actual numbers and realize the shop hasn't grown in three years.

The car in the photo doesn't tell you anything about the business photographing it. It doesn't tell you whether the paint got measured. Whether the products are worth using. Whether the shop is insured. Whether the owner is making a living or buying himself a job with worse hours than the one he left.

We post our work because documenting it is part of how we do it. Every correction gets readings. Every coating gets registered. The photos are the byproduct, not the point.

If the content is the whole business, the business is the content. That's a hard place to grow from.

Labor day. We weren't officially open, but we weren't officially closed either. We got in early to start on this 1986 Jaguar XJS V12.

Everything original. Interior, exterior, all of it.

It's here for the week because the owner wants it show-ready.

We started with a full interior and exterior inspection and a complete paint depth scan with report. From there: foam prewash, rinse, foam wash, chemical decontamination, mechanical decontamination with clay, rinse, and blow dry.

The rest of the week goes to correcting every panel of this single stage paint as safely as possible while removing as little as we can. Single stage on a forty-year-old car gives you one shot. There's no clear coat sitting on top to absorb the correction, so every pass comes straight off the color. That's why the readings matter more here than on almost anything else that comes through.

Once the paint is where it needs to be, we'll sit down with the client and decide between a sealant and a longer-lasting ceramic preservation package.

The interior gets a full reset: deep leather clean, condition, and protection, along with the wood, carpets, and glass.

Got a call a few weeks ago about a 40-year-old Jaguar that needed some TLC.

The second I heard “40 years old” and “original paint,” I knew this wasn’t going to be a normal consultation.

I packed a small bag of tools and went to see the car in person.

When I pulled up, David met me in the driveway and told me he’d been following Stick to the Details for a couple of years after finding us through a Destination Brevard post.

He already knew who we were. He knew our work. And when the time came to have this car taken care of, he knew who he wanted to call.

And this one is special.

A 40-year-old Jaguar XJS V12. Original interior. Original paint. Four decades of history that we have absolutely no interest in erasing. Ok that’s a lie.. we’re definitely going to be erasing 40 years worth of built up oxidation and swirls.

David wants the interior reconditioned and the paint brought back as far as it safely can be.. while preserving what has survived all these years.

That last part matters.

Anybody can get aggressive with old paint and make something look good for a picture. Our job is figuring out what we have to work with, how much we can safely improve, and where to stop.

A few minutes ago, the flatbed pulled up and the Jaguar rolled off.

It’ll be staying with us for a bit.

This should be a fun one to document.

"No way I'm paying $1,500 for a paint correction. My buddy will buff it for $300."

Then the sun hits the paint.

A correction is not running a polisher over a vehicle until it looks wet. The goal is removing swirls, scratches, haze, and holograms while leaving behind as much clear coat as possible. Clear coat is finite. Every pass removes some of it, and it does not grow back.

That's why the process matters. The vehicle gets washed and decontaminated first. The paint gets measured and inspected. Test spots determine the correct pad and polish combination before a single panel is finished. Some vehicles need multiple stages. Proper lighting confirms the defects are actually gone rather than temporarily filled.

So a $1,500 correction is not $1,500 to buff a car. It's the time, the equipment, the readings, and the technique required to correct paint without spending clear coat that can't be replaced.

There is a place for a $300 polish. It just isn't the same service, and it shouldn't be sold as one.

When polishing is rushed, the paint can end up worse than it started. Dirty pads, the wrong combination, or moving too fast leaves buffer trails, holograms, and fresh swirls. Fixing that costs more clear coat, and there's only so much to give.
