Hey Folks..

When Rockfish stopped serving breakfast, the Rockfish car group thinned out and scattered in all directions to parts unknown. Elvis was no longer regularly being spotted at Rockfish.

The Covid hangover took its toll, but it appears there is a glimmer of hope as the distant sound of deep throated exhaust has been detected.

This past Saturday July 24th, there was a spontaneous car gathering by some of the old Rockfish group that occurred on short notice last Saturday in McKinney at the "Hydeout" Cafe.

We heard about it and drove over to check it out and were pleasantly surprised. Good parking, good food, and a good amount of classic vehicles on display.

After chatting and visiting for a while, we took an informal survey in the parking lot and all those in attendance wanted to make this an "Every Saturday" car gathering, so as Forest Gump would say.. "And....just like that,.... there was a new car gathering"

So that being said, here's the particulars:

* As of last Saturday, This car gathering now officially occurs every Saturday morning. Last Saturday was the kickoff, with many Saturdays to come

* Hydeout restaurant is our new home and promises to be even better. Hydeout Cafe is near Central and Eldorado parkway, just east of Central US 75, near Wells Fargo Bank. The street address is 1751 Eldorado Pkwy #300 McKinney.

* The cafe opens for breakfast at 7:00 AM with a good breakfast menu including great omelets and biscuits and gravy.

*All classic vehicles are requested to park as a group, as together as possible, along the north and west outer edge of the parking lot, near Wells Fargo Bank.

*This is a loose-knit relaxed gathering. Come as you are, drive what you got.

* Everyone is welcome...there are no strangers, just friends we haven't met yet...

* Please note, If your car is being towed in on a wrecker, please bring some cat litter to soak up the dripping oil.

* Special thanks to Jim ("Jed Clampet") Bray, (67 Falcon Ranchero) and Dale (The Whale), and others who helped arrange for what appears to be a perfect morning car gathering location.

Hey all....
Several of you have emailed or posted on Facebook wondering what happened to the Rockfish car gathering.
Pure and simple, the trickle down effect of Covid caused Rockfish to eliminate serving breakfast. Without hot coffee and the smell of bacon frying on a Saturday morning, it was hard to keep the car group together. Plus with so many people "working from home" due to Covid, other car events began to spring up, thereby diluting the attendance at Rockfish.
We spoke with the Rockfish manager and he personally wanted to restart the Saturday morning breakfast car gathering however, he lost a lot of his employees during the Covid shutdown and now even though the restaurant is open for regular hours, he can barely find enough employees to keep Rockfish open during regular hours, much less provide an additional wait-staff crew for Saturday morning.

So long story short, Rockfish was a victim of Covid.

Many have expressed interest in reforming at a different location, however it is hard to find a nearby breakfast restaurant with enough parking suitable for classic cars. If anyone is willing to do the scouting work and find a restaurant with the following, feel free to pass the word.

* Good breakfast food (not a sushi restaurant)
* Opens by 7:00 on Saturday
* Has a cooperative and supportive restaurant manager
* Within a somewhat close radius to Collin County
* Parking for a moderate to large number of Classic cars

Thank you to all who attended and assisted with the Christmas Toy Drive at Rockfish this past Saturday Dec 5.... And special thanks to Sheriff (Ret) Terry Box for assisting and helping to spread the word. We raised $1000 cash and an equal amount in gift and toys for the neglected children of Collin County. Fun day with Santa and cars!

Hey Folks, Reminder, tomorrow morning Saturday December 5th will be the annual Classic Car Truck Hot Rod Christmas toy and gift collection benefitting abused and neglected children of Collin County, as overseen by the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center. That's right, Christmas isn't cancelled! You heard it here first. Yes, a Hot Rod Christmas gift drive, with loud exhaust and an occasional squealed tire (accidentally of course, like "uh, my foot slipped off the clutch").Those of you that have attended in the past know about it. For those of you that don't know, each year the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center has a Christmas gift collection for the abused children of Collin County. The collected gifts will be distributed to the court-appointed guardian or foster parent so the child will have a gift to open on Christmas Day. In some cases it will be the only gift the child will receive . You might notice I did not use the word "Toy" as much because while some of the abused children are very young, others are pre-teen and even some are teenagers.

Tomorrow the weather forecast is mostly sunny and a high of 61 in the afternoon. Sounds like a great car day.One of Santa's elfs named Stephanie is bringing donuts, so there is a free donut for the first 100 persons. The Donut line will start near the pretty lady Elf . No line-breakers and no saving spots in line. Rockfish will be serving hot coffee and have bathrooms available. We will have Christmas music and Holiday Rock and Roll. Santa will also be in attendance. See details and flyer in the original email below.
The event will be held in the parkkng lot at Rockfish Grill of McMcKinney. (Same parking lot as Belks Dept store), near Central Expressway US75 and Eldorado Parkway from 8:00 AM until the cars and toys stop coming, which should be about 11:00 AM. The parking lot area is a little hard to see from the highway so search for "Rockfish McKinney" in your GPS or Google maps and you will find us.
What: Christmas Gift collection
For: Abused and Neglected children of Collin CountyWhen: Saturday December 5th. from 8:00 AM until "about" 10:30, or until Santa's sleigh is full. The gift drive is the Saturday 10 days after Thanksgiving Day (not the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend).
Where: Rockfish Grill / Belks Dept store parking lot in McKinney near Central US75 and Eldorado parkway. Google Rockfish Grill McKinney or Belks and you can't miss it.Other: We will have Elf helpers to collect the gifts and toys, good cheer, and Christmas Rock and Roll music. If you can't bring a gift, cash or check donations will be accepted. Even though the pandemic has limited Rockfish's breakfast, they will be providing coffee and access to the Restrooms. If you want something other than coffee and a bathroom, then BYOW (Bring your own whatever).

Extra: As of last week the only thing we didn't have lined up was a visit from Santa, so we dusted off and cranked up the old Sears and Roebuck model 1921 wireless set and sent a Telegraph to the North Pole. Two days passed,... and no response. I expected to at least hear back from the Elf Telegraph office, however after a week I was surprised when Old St Nick himself sent a message back. Seems he and his crew of Elf's have been spending the last month working day and night on his sleigh shock absorbers.........seems the Sleigh springs are worn out from hauling that 4,000 lb load of toys each year, and one kid wanting a 500 lb Shetland pony didn't help either. Well anyway, the springs are going in this week and they are doing other stuff such as repairing reindeer harnesses, polishing bells, the usual Christmas get-ready stuff. So the good news is Santa has agreed to swing by Rockfish on Saturday Morning December 5th to oversee the Hot Rod, Classic and antique car toy collection. We need to reserve about a 100 foot landing strip in the parking because it takes some room to slow that sled down once it hits the ground.
More Extra: For music, KRUD 109FM part time sound engineer and Blues singer "Pork Chop" Jones will be on hand to play Holiday Rock and Roll and do a simulcast live call-in from famous Radio Personality Wink Dinkerson. Signed photos of Wink are 50 cents each. Signed pictures of Pork Chop are free.
There are a bunch of pictures of last year's event and a flyer is also attached.

2020....Wow, what a year. I'm glad it's almost over. Those of you old enough to remember there was a hit song in the 1970's called "In the year 2525" that forecast an uncertain future . I think about that song sometimes. Well, 2020 is almost behind us and good riddance. Only a couple of things left to do....carve up some Thanksgiving Turkey and have a Hot Rod Christmas Toy collection drive.
