Quick tip for your Saturday: take two minutes and check your tire tread before the week starts.

The easiest method is the penny test. Place a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch — and it is time for new tires.

For a more accurate reading, pick up an inexpensive tread depth gauge from any auto parts store. Safe tread is 4/32 of an inch or more. Anything below that and you are reducing your stopping distance significantly.
