What is a tire wear bar, and why is it important?

Tire wear bars are small, raised ridges in the molding of a tire that are used to show age and wear, as per the name.

It is important to keep an eye on these wear bars because once they're worn down to 3/32 or 2/32, your tires need to be replaced.
