Willey's Tire Shop & Auto Repair - Marquette

Willey's Tire Shop & Auto Repair - Marquette Family owned and operated since 1923...Check us out on Willeystire.com Willey's Tire Shop was opened in 1923 in Ishpeming, MI by Marcus Willey Sr.

Since opening we have had 4 locations in downtown Ishpeming. In 1951 it was handed down to Mark's oldest son Jim and was known as Jim's Tire Shop from 1951 to 1972. In 1972 we moved into our present location and the name was changed back to Willey's Tire Shop. When most of the boys in the family became teenagers, they all had a job at the store. They would work Saturdays and after school in the fa

ll, sometimes staying to midnight during the busy season right before snowfall. In 1982 it was then sold to the youngest brother, Marcus Willey Jr. In 1992 we opened our newest store in Marquette, MI. It is managed by Mark's son Scott. Back in 1923 we were selling Federal tires that were made with cotton cords. Later cotton cords were replaced by rayon cords, then nylon and polyester. Finally steel belts were introduced in radial tires, just like the tires we sell today. We also seen wheels change, they went from clincher rims to tube type and finally into the tubeless wheels we use today. Balancing has progressed through years. At first there was no balancing, then it went to bubble balancing, and finally into computerized spin balancing we use today. In 1986 we started doing computerized alignments and have been upgrading our equipment as technology advanced through the years. Some of our employees have been with us since 1982 and others have 19 to 26 years of experience. Through the years many things have changed, we now have access to most major brand name tires, and many private labels. We still try to offer friendly small town service to everyone we meet. Willey's Tire Shop has been family owned and operated since 1923. We are located on Wright St right behind Target and just down the street from Arby's. We offer Tire Service as well as Brakes, Alignments, Shocks, Struts, and most front end work.

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 49 degrees and it was raining. Cool and damp outside once again as I started my day.

Traffic was somewhat light this morning as I headed to work. Overall not a lot to talk about as far as road conditions. No road delays or construction going on early this morning.

Well tomorrow Little Scott is going to his first wrestling camp. This brings back a ton of memories as my boys all wrestled and attended these camps when they were young. They went to J Robinson's Minnesota camp, Barry Davis's Wisconsin Camp, The University of Michigan wrestling camp, and several others.

The one I remember the most was the Camp of Champs in Westboro, Wisconsin. It was a Father - Son camp ran by John and Ben Peterson who were Olympians in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. They both won a Gold and Silver medal at these games.

The Father - Son camp was kind of unique. We stayed at a ski resort and we were lodged in these little cabins with a couple other Father - Son combo's. Each day they did wrestling techinque of course...but there was also a Father session where these guys talked about how to " not " live your life through your kids. I have seen a lot of parents do this....they were good in high school so their kids should be too. It was a great learning experience all around. The other unique thing was # 1 they had a cabin competition and # 2 the way they kept the kids busy.

They did a lot of games between the wrestling sessions. I thought it was kind of funny that we played soccer. But when I asked Ben told me...well if it was 12 hours straight of wrestling the kids minds would wander and they would get bored. If we just made them run between practices it to would cause the kinds minds to wander....so we play games like soccer to reset their minds and yet still exercise their bodies. It worked...lol.

The cabin competition was fun too. Each day you got points for doing some sort of activity. They would inspect your cabin to make sure you cleaned it and you got points. There was also a fishing competition, bb gun competition, archery and much more. I am proud to say my boys and I won the fishing competition all 4 times we went to this camp....but it was kind of unfair due to us being Yoopers and growing up fishing....especially when many of the boys there were from the big cities and some of them have never fished.

One last memory before we go. There was a coach there named Peter Stroe. He was a master at doing throws. One session he asked for a volunteer...of course no one did. He was a much older man from Romania with very broken english. He pointed at me...said attack me...I thought...you are so much older than me...I don't want to hurt you. Well he poked and poke and I finally attacked him only to be thrown half way across the room...boom...I hit the mat like a ton of bricks. I am not going to lie...it hurt bad as he had me twisted in every which way all while talking to the kids.

Finally I get up, sore as can be and he says " anybody want to see it again ?? " And there he was....my own son with his hand raised...so I ended up going for another ride....boom....ouch.

Well this leads me to the Question of the Day !! Did you ever attend some sort of summer camp ?? Any memories you would like to share ?? Let me know !!

Well we are Open 8 until 5 Today !! Remember us when you need your vehicle fixed...between our 2 stores we have a lot to offer !!

Have a Great Day !! - Scott Sr. - Your Old timer Wrestling Father and Local Tire Guy !!

Hopefully Litte Scott comes back with some awesome memories....

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to a chilly and damp 36 degrees this morning. There were thick patches of fog mostly by the little streams and lakes I passed as I head to town.

Traffic was light this morning but I will say there are a lot of traffic cones and signs up in many areas....so look forward to traffic delays in the future. Nothing really to report as of yet though...at least on the roads I travel to from Ishpeming to Marquette.

Well I was thinking on my drive to Marquette when I was out visiting Derek I missed my " Work Anniversary. "

It was June 4th, 1982. It was the last day of school and we only had a ½ day. It was one of the few days we were allowed to ride our bikes to school…for whatever reason it was frowned upon any other day.

But today was report card day and our last day of school for the school year.

So I got my report card and I headed to the tire shop to show my Dad. He recently became the new owner of Willey’s Tire Shop after my uncle Jim had passed away.

It was summer and I had all these dreams of swimming, hiking, just being…well you know being lazy. I headed down to the shop to show my Dad my report card…usually if I had good grades he gave me a few dollars and I was excited to go spend it.

I walked into the store to show him my report card and he gave me a few bucks. He then said, you know how you wanted a snowmobile or a dirt bike…well if you want to help clean up the shop and do some inventory I will pay you and you can save up and buy one.

Now I was in a pickle. I had absolutely no interest in working. I wanted to be a kid…but the idea of a snowmobile or dirt bike was too much to for me to handle. Most of my friends had snowmobiles…and several had dirt bikes. I had an opportunity to earn my own money and spend it as I wanted…

Well, you probably guessed it…I started working. I worked most of the summer…I was still young and took a day off or 2 to go be a kid...I would hang out with friends at times but if I am being 100 percent honest…I worked a lot. Later I worked after school during busy season and pretty much whenever Dad needed me. 9 years later 1991 I found myself down here at our new store in Marquette and I started to manager our new location.

Well 44 years has gone by. I have seen a lot of changes in technology and I met a lot of people. I have watched parents come in with their children…and then their children’s children come in and buy tires. I have sadly seen people pass and their widows come in because they trust us….and I hope…someday when I am gone we are still Open and this continues…

Well…I guess I should get back to work…I am getting older but I still work on tires and vehicles personally every day. I have slowed down a little in the last 44 years. I have aches and pains that I never had before…but just like our 103 year old business…I keep plugging away doing the best I can…lol.

I said this before but I want to be on TV6 like that Roman guy was on the Dr. Garrett’s commercial….I am Scott Willey Sr. – I am 86 years old and still working…I plan to retire someday…someday soon….but not quite yet….

Thank You to all our Great Customers who have made it possible for me to have a job for all these years…I still don’t own a dirt bike…but maybe…someday….lol.

Well we are Open 8 until 5 Today !! Give us a call if you need us and I will get you an appointment as soon as possible...and I may even be the " Old Guy " working on your car. Until then I hope everyone has a Great Day !! - Scott Sr. - Your rapidly getting older by the minute Local Tire Guy !!

A chilly and damp start to the morning. Foggy but temperatures should be in the 60's today. Just a normal summer day in the U.P.

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 41 degrees this morning. It was damp and there was a chill in the air. It was one of those days that my shoes got all wet as I was doing the farm chores...that means stinky feet today...lol.

Traffic was kind of light this morning as I headed to Marquette. Traffic was flowing smoothly and there was no road construction at least on the path I took to work today.

Today I am still trying to get back into the groove after taking my vacation. It sure is hard to get back in the routine after a few days off. With that being said I was once again thinking about Grand Teton and Yellowstone Park. I will say I really love the outdoors and I seen some of the most beautiful landscapes, moutains, water falls and of course the geisers. If you love the outdoors like I do...and have a chance to go...make sure you checkout these parks. I seen Bison, Bears, Elk, just about every kind of bird native to that area. It was a once in a lifetime vacation for me...not to mention I spent time with a son I don't get to be with often...and I ran a 5K through one of these parks...lol.

Well Today's Question of the Day !! I can now say I have been to 2 National Parks...if the opportuntity ever comes up...what parks or attractions do you think I should see...or better yet, what was your favorite destination ??

We are Open 8 until 5 Today !! We are a Locally Owned and Operated Family business working hard since 1923. Born and raised right here in the U.P. Yep....Yoopers since day 1 !!

Give us a call if you need us and I will get you an appointment as soon as possible...and Remember We Are Much More Than Just a Tire Store...Brakes, Alignments, Struts, Batteries, Bearings, and Much More !!

Well I better get to work. Until we meet again....Have a Great Day !! - Scott Sr. - Your Local Tire Guy !!

Today I am sharing a few pictures of our trip again...sorry for the selfies but my wife and daughter do not like their pictures taken...lol.

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 34 degrees this morning. There was a light layer of ice on my windshield as I warmed up the old truck. Funny the sun was already out and it looked so much warmer than it was.

Traffic was heavy this morning as I headed to work. No road construction to report today and everything was flowing smoothly.

Well as tradition I usually talk a little about my weekend adventures. I already talked about my mini adventure and going to get hay. We stopped at the Tioga Park on the way back. Now that park is connected to a lot of memories as it was a stopping point when I was a kid when we were going to and coming back from Big Erick's Bridge. We used to go camping, fising and smelting up there and as a boy I loved to play on that little bridge and let my imagination wander.

Sunday I woke up full of energy and ambition and I was going to knock off a bunch of my honey do list chores....well...truth be told I did finish one chore. I woke up and many of my plans were ruined due to the rain. I thought...well I am going to put on a jack and go cut firewood. I had this huge pile of logs that needed to be cut to the right length and split. Well I am very proud to say...even in the rain I got all of the wood done. I know most people probalby do not think of cutting firewood as a fun project...but I turn on my radio and go to town. With Terri's upcoming knee surgery I am trying to get as many chores done before she is out of action....and I am proud to say I think I have more than enough firewood to last the winter.

Well that was my weekend in a nutshell....of course Monday's Question of the Day !! Did you do anything fun this weekend ?? Did you go anywhere special...and if so...is it somewhere I should experience some day ?? Well don't be shy...let me know !!

We are Open 8 until 5 Today !! We do have tire related Openings this week between our 2 stores and our mechanics are not too far off. Give us a call if you need us !!

So Terri and I went on our little adventure to get hay. 60 bales this time and our favorite farmer was waiting for us. We asked if he would like some farm fresh eggs and he said No....I don't know how to cook. He smiled and said my Mom cooked for me for 18 years and then I got married and my wife cooked for me for the next 66. Once again he insisted on loading the trailer with me.

A trip to get hay would not be complete without a pizza from Irene's and then we stopped at the Tioga rest stop for me to re-live some childhood memories...if you don't already know...I have lots of memories...lol.

We got home and I spent a little time splitting firewood for the sauna...oh by the way...Henry our hay guy had his sauna going....lol.

All and all a good mini adventure today.

We are closed tomorrow but Open Monday. I promise if you need your car fixed we will do our best to help...

Until then....Enjoy the Weekend !! - Scott Sr. - Your Local Tire Guy !!

Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 54 degrees...and....it was raining again. 4 days in a row now...but I am not complaining because living in the Jack Pines I know we need the rain or we have that high fire danger. And lets face it....581 has had a few nasty fires over the years.

Traffic was very light this morning. Not much to talk about today. No road construction...everything was flowing smoothly.

Well it is the weekend and I have a never ending list of chores to do....but today a mini adventure. We are heading to Baraga again to get some hay. Penuche, Jack, and the rest of the family will be happy as Terri really spoils them...lol.

Now I say it is an adventure because the gentleman we have been getting it from is a real character. Terri called and tried to set up a time with him to get the hay and he must really be a man stuck in his routine. " Well Sunday doesn't work because it is a day of rest. " Saturday works but not too early because I like to have breakfast and then I get the sauna going for sauna later. ( You have to imagine this being said in the strongest Finish accent you have ever heard.) So we have a time set at 2 o'clock because at 4 it is time to Sauna.

Then....he likes to load it himself. He is in his 80's if not closer to his 90's and insists on loading my trailer to make sure I am doing it right. At the end he always Thanks me for " helping " him load it...lol.

An added prize though....Irene's Pizza is usually on the menu for the ride home...and of course a stop at either the Tiago Park or Cannon Falls to stretch just for a moment....and usually me running across that little bridge reliving my childhood....

Well that is my plans for the Day....The Question of the Day !! Do you have any plans for the Weekend ?? Let me know !!

We are Open Today in Marquette until Noon.

You know I still get told almost daily " I didn't know you do brakes "

Well we have 4 certified mechanics between our 2 stores and we offer a lot of mechanic repairs. So give us a call...chances are we can help !!

I hope you have an amazing weekend....Scott Sr. - Your Local Tire Guy !!

Today's Picture is of the double rainbow over my house this morning. I could not find a pot of gold anywhere....hmmm....maybe I was the pot of gold....I doubt Terri would agree...but that is the story I am sticking to.....lol.
