Good Morning Everyone !! Well I woke up to 49 degrees and it was raining. Cool and damp outside once again as I started my day.
Traffic was somewhat light this morning as I headed to work. Overall not a lot to talk about as far as road conditions. No road delays or construction going on early this morning.
Well tomorrow Little Scott is going to his first wrestling camp. This brings back a ton of memories as my boys all wrestled and attended these camps when they were young. They went to J Robinson's Minnesota camp, Barry Davis's Wisconsin Camp, The University of Michigan wrestling camp, and several others.
The one I remember the most was the Camp of Champs in Westboro, Wisconsin. It was a Father - Son camp ran by John and Ben Peterson who were Olympians in the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. They both won a Gold and Silver medal at these games.
The Father - Son camp was kind of unique. We stayed at a ski resort and we were lodged in these little cabins with a couple other Father - Son combo's. Each day they did wrestling techinque of course...but there was also a Father session where these guys talked about how to " not " live your life through your kids. I have seen a lot of parents do this....they were good in high school so their kids should be too. It was a great learning experience all around. The other unique thing was # 1 they had a cabin competition and # 2 the way they kept the kids busy.
They did a lot of games between the wrestling sessions. I thought it was kind of funny that we played soccer. But when I asked Ben told me...well if it was 12 hours straight of wrestling the kids minds would wander and they would get bored. If we just made them run between practices it to would cause the kinds minds to wander....so we play games like soccer to reset their minds and yet still exercise their bodies. It worked...lol.
The cabin competition was fun too. Each day you got points for doing some sort of activity. They would inspect your cabin to make sure you cleaned it and you got points. There was also a fishing competition, bb gun competition, archery and much more. I am proud to say my boys and I won the fishing competition all 4 times we went to this camp....but it was kind of unfair due to us being Yoopers and growing up fishing....especially when many of the boys there were from the big cities and some of them have never fished.
One last memory before we go. There was a coach there named Peter Stroe. He was a master at doing throws. One session he asked for a volunteer...of course no one did. He was a much older man from Romania with very broken english. He pointed at me...said attack me...I thought...you are so much older than me...I don't want to hurt you. Well he poked and poke and I finally attacked him only to be thrown half way across the room...boom...I hit the mat like a ton of bricks. I am not going to lie...it hurt bad as he had me twisted in every which way all while talking to the kids.
Finally I get up, sore as can be and he says " anybody want to see it again ?? " And there he was....my own son with his hand raised...so I ended up going for another ride....boom....ouch.
Well this leads me to the Question of the Day !! Did you ever attend some sort of summer camp ?? Any memories you would like to share ?? Let me know !!
