Jim Passmore commented that John Campbell is "one bad mo fo".
Let me tell you how good of a guy he really is.
Now this story is secret and I wouldn't tell just anybody, but at last years Kansas Motorcycle Hall of Fame event in Wichita. Almost all of the best racers from the 70's were there (you need to make next years event) and there were some great stories to tell. It was a blast. Anyway, at the beginning of the night "Hog Wild" was hired to cater the food. I had someone else hired to drop off the drinks and they didn't get near enough. So, at the last minute I personally stepped out since I thought I needed to take control to make sure I got what I needed. I knew there was a store right down the road for drinks, so I high tailed it down. I had given a credit card for deposit on the food and since there was a 3% discount for cash-I told them I would pay cash when they got there-this saved me about $50. When I left I gave Mike-the guy who likes to talk on the microphone $1500 and told him to give it to the caterer when they arrived. I got back with the drinks about 7 minutes after 6-and it was supposed to start serving food at 6. Nothing was being served-I asked the Hog Wild guy and he said he didn't know who to ask so he just sat there. I found Mike (asked why he didn't give them the money-he said no one asked) Nothing like delegating. I immediately gave them the money and John Cambell was still standing there with his plate. 10 minutes late.
At the end of the evening John came up to me with $63 to help me pay for some of the expenses, which was totally not needed. He did not know the whole story-it would have taken to long to tell, so I told him how good of a guy he is.
John Campbell is like most all of the "larger than life" guys from the era. They were all cut from a different cloth and he would give you the shirt off his back. I've talked to him countless times since the event about the races he has been in lately and he is a special guy. (and super competitive)
So yeah, I agree-he is one bad Mo Fo!-and a good guy.

True Grit!

WEEK 17 — 18 WEEKS TO GO

The Florence GP definitely left some scars this weekend. 😅🏁

100 miles of Kansas off-road terrain, heat, rocks, dust, fatigue… and apparently enough throttle to start tearing k***s off the rear tire.

The pictures probably explain the rest better than words:
One minute you’re charging through sections feeling pretty good…
and the next minute you’re sitting in a folding chair covered in dust questioning your life choices while drinking a Chelada. 🍻😂

But honestly, this was probably one of the most important weekends of the entire Baja preparation so far.

Not because of results.
Not because of speed.
But because events like Florence GP expose weaknesses fast:
fitness,
hydration,
focus,
bike setup,
recovery,
mental toughness,
and how hard you can push when you’re already tired.

A few weeks ago I completed the Baja Rally School in San Quintín, Baja Mexico and officially became certified to compete in Dakar-style rally navigation events anywhere in the world.

Now the focus shifts back toward consistency:
gym work,
mobility,
bike maintenance,
navigation practice,
and rebuilding after spending two straight weeks on the road.

The countdown keeps getting shorter:
18 weeks until Baja Rally 2026.

And based on the condition of that rear tire… I’m probably going to need a few more before this is over. 😬🔥

don't forget to punch in Kansas Motorcycle Racer Hall of Fame and put in your stories. It is the only way I could allow everyone free access to the page. Sorry if it is a hassle but once you do it you will have fun with the other guys who can share stories. That is where the Buddy Lee "True Grit" stories will be told and rated so they win a hat or the overall cutout trophy. Naturally it is just fun to hear about how much effort we all put into this-and how much fun we have.

I have donated some money to the local restaurants and it gives everyone the chance to get the discounts mentioned. The whole idea behind this for me is they love us enough to support our passion. Please support them during our event!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are dining with a group, the $5 discount will be applied to one meal per group.

Just so everyone knows-Kansas Motorcycle Racer Hall of Fame has come to an agreement with the infinitely wise Board of Directors at the Florence Grand Prix and there is going to be a Buddy Lee "True Grit" award given. After this race is over we will give anyone who wants to contribute a story of how difficult their race was a open page to post their story. But they must prevail (unlike me DNFing last year due to losing spark) . I don't care if it was coming up with the money to get to the race, vehicle problems, or race bike, or physical problems. If you overcame adversity we want to hear your story (but it has to be based on truth;) The first three story tellers will win a hat and the first place guy will win a cut out trophy just like the guys who win the race get.
If any of you knew Buddy-he was relentless. He never let difficulty get in the way of winning. Truly bigger than life!

It’s coming up!! 54 years later.
