I’m fully expecting this post to generate a few “Has Stan lost his mind?” comments. I’ll explain my reasons for it in a bit, but lets get the important part out of the way first – SOMEBODY is about to get an amazing deal on a really, really good carburetor.
In December of 2023, we introduced our “Black Ops” version of Holley’s 80541-2 650HP gauge-legal 4brl carb. We weren’t expecting to sell a lot of them (even though it didn’t exactly turn out that way) for several reasons, the biggest being price. They take a lot of hours – in both machining and hand work - to build, and just like ZZ Top…we “Gotsta Get Paid.” Also, the horsepower increase from the Black Ops carburetor’s increased airflow capacity over our mid-level 650GL only became significant – and therefore only justified the price difference – with a 604 crate engine or better. 602 crate engines always showed a gain with the Black Ops carb vs. our 650GL, but that gain rarely exceeded 5 horsepower, whereas a 604 (along with a “built” engine) usually gains between 10 and 12. If you race a 602 crate and have to run a gauge-legal 650 4brl carb and need new shocks, or sway bars, or wheels, or brakes, or whatever…those items were simply a more cost-effective use of the $900 price difference between the two carbs. I've explained this to probably twenty or more customers over the past year, and was often thanked for being candid and not trying to over-sell our products. Now to my point:
Since January of this year, we’ve quietly been working on an improved version of our Black Ops 650, and now it’s ready. Flow bench tested, dyno tested, track tested…and just as importantly, TECH SHED tested. It’s just plain bad-ass fast, even on a 602. I have never, and will never, represent anything that we sell as being our “very best effort” if it truly is not, and that’s where we are regarding our last remaining in-stock 650 Black Ops Version 1.0 carburetor. Until today, I would have told anyone that this is the best gauge-legal 650HP oval track carburetor available anywhere and sincerely believed that to be true, but not anymore. Here then, is the deal:
We’re going to sell this last new 650 Black Ops “Version 1.0” gauge-legal 4brl carburetor along with one of our dedicated 1” thick 602 or 604 spacers, as appropriate for the buyer’s application, for $1600.00. That’s $19.00 shy of 50% off. This is obviously a “one of one” offer, so give us a call if you’re interested.

Got dumped on lap 1. Seems this team just can't buy a break. In fairness, the car in front of Bobby had an engine problem the moment before, and the spin was pretty much unavoidable. The car is still in one piece and all four wheels still touch the ground at the same time. It will need ANOTHER new right front brake rotor before tomorrow, but compared to Monday, that's a blessing. On the upside, we had an opportunity to dial in the carburetor tuning for tonight’s atmospheric conditions.. The engine is close to perfect now, kudos to Paul French (Horsepower Hill).

The back end of the car was still moving around a little too much during final practice. Great when you're talking about your wife...but your race car?...not so much. As Harry Hogg said in Days Of Thunder, "Loose is fast and on the edge of control." That's true in an asphalt Modified...for about 10 laps. Then, the right rear tire overheats and things get REALLY interesting. The crew made small adjustments in several areas after final practice and the car should be better in tonight’s feature.

Well, they did it! Hell of a job by the #12 crew. Everybody on that team is exhausted, but that will all go away in about 15 minutes when practice begins. They say Chick's dig guys with battle scars, let's hope Lady Luck takes a liking to this one.

Monday night after the last lap carnage in the 602 modified feature. Paul French and crew worked their asses off all day to get the car right, and it paid off. Bobby Jones could put the car anywhere he wanted. But at New Smyrna, seems there is always one guy intent on earning his "NDSOB" hardcard with one lap to go. The team is thrashing to get the car repaired for tomorrow night's race. The car was just too damn fast last night to go home without proving a point.

I don't know this guy and certainly don't have anything against him...but when you're already up against the chip at this point, maybe it's time to re-think your setup.

First qualifying session of the day coming up. The car is WAY quicker right now than it has any right to be...no better than it's turning in the middle of the corner. Paul French and Bobby Jones will get it sorted before the feature though, and that 's gonna make things really tough for everybody else.
