Washington County's 1st Fatal Accident

Ida Corner, who married Dr. George Hutchinson in 1894, would grab her camera 📷 and accompany her husband on house calls quite frequently. In doing so Ida captured images of small town activities throughout Washington County. The "first Washington County Children's Home, railroad depots, mills, rivers, floods, gravestones, frozen falls, natural rock formations, decaying log cabins, and large Victorian homes were all captured on glass plates and printed by Ida [(Corner Hutchinson)], many on postcards.

Washington County's first fatal automobile accident, as seen here, is one of the countless events she captured. "On the night of May 14, 1911, Newport Pike was the scene of a fatal automobile accident. A photograph of the wreckage of the two-seated Oberlin, a valuable car from the Marietta Motor Car Company, was captured by Ida Hutchinson at daylight the next morning."

Mahone Tire now occupies the grounds that once belonged to L. Gruber & Sons Department Store.

Per Dan Benson & his Marietta page,

"L. Gruber & Sons Department Store was established in July of 1903 at 155 Front street at Monroe, now Mahone Tire. They were a wholesale and retail dealer and jobber in dry goods, notions, hardware, groceries, clothing, shoes, china, glassware, wallpaper, carpets, matting, oil cloth, linoleum, window shades and paints. They had it all, and were very popular.

During the Christmas season they were one of the best places to go for all your needs. People of all ages would flock there to see the wonderful displays of unique items. Then on December 28, 1946 the community lost one their favorites. It was completely destroyed by fire and never returned. It was a major loss to the city of Marietta."
